Final Comments On the Oct. 11 Evening Holly Kreft, Community Development Director, stated, "The arboretum owns a sign at Hwy 41 and Hwy 5 and we've actually entered into a partnership with them to replace their sign on the corner and incorporate signage for the city as well." Stated Cara Geheren,. "The Chanhassen city engineer has participated in all of these discussions. He offered to be here tonight. He would recommend whatever Victoria supports. We're all working very closely together." Added Mayor Thun, "I talked to the mayor of Chanhassen and he agreed this mostly affects Victoria, and he would try to be as supportive as they could." Asked Councilmember O'Connor, "If we express a consensus tonight on an option, what is the ability to revoke later?" Cara replied that in giving a basic approval, the path has been chosen. The city administrator reported the Councilmember Tom Strigel, absent from this meeting, had preferred Option #1 and said, "the quicker, the better." Said Mayor Thun, "I've been impressed with our staff and engineers. Thank you, Cara. You've done an excellent job." In addition to the six-week closure of Hwy 5 from Hwy 41 to Stieger Lake Lane in Victoria -- there will be a three-month closure of Hwy 5 through downtown Victoria from the sink hole to the bridge, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. That's when Stieger Lake Lane through downtown Victoria will be exceptionally handy.
SCHOOL SUPERINTENENT VISITS VICTORIA TECHNOLOGY REFERENDUM IS NOVEMBER 8TH Dr. James Bauck, Superintendent of School District 112, spoke to City of Victoria councilmembers on October 24th about the upcoming Technology Referendum. Also in attendance were Andrew Kothenbeutel, Secondary Instructional Technology Coordinator, and Jill VeLure, Principal at Victoria Elementary School. The District is asking for $1.98 million per year for the next ten years in order to create a technology funding source for its several schools. Voting occurs on Tuesday, November 8th. All Victoria residents vote at City Hall. Stated Dr. Bauck, "We've asked cities to give us 15 to 20 minutes so that you know what we're doing with this levy." Including their presentation and council questions afterwards, they were given 60 minutes. Dr. Bauck first showed a short video produced at District 112 that included some of its students and staff. One of the students stated, "We need things to keep us reading other than just reading from a textbook." Stated one of the teachers, "We have to go where the kids live." Stated Dr. Bauck, "We are not going to abandon paper and pencils." He added, "This technology is not about buying gadgets. It also allows students to bring their own tools from home. The curriculum is always going to drive what we purchase." He said a successful referendum would mean a tax increase of $149/year on a $400,000 home, for example -- more on a higher valued home, less on a lesser valued home. In comparing technology budgets in various school districts, he said, "A major shift is now to the east of us rather than Shakopee and Waconia." Neither Shakopee nor Waconia have an extra technology initiative, but Eden Prairie, Edina, Minnetonka, Wayzata, and other school districts do have such an initiative. "There is no technology in place here [in District 112] because we've been busy building schools," said Mr. Bauck. Chanhassen High School was completed and first open in 2009 ; Victoria Elementary School was completed and first open in 2005, as was a large new wing to Chaska High School. Cost of a successful referendum would mean $220/pupil for technology. Mr. Bauck said technology for area schools ranges from $120 to $648 per pupil. "Are we going to still teach reading, writing, and figuring?" he asked. "Yes," he replied, adding, "Personalized learning has been a goal of ours. One day there will be no grades, but students will move through the system at their own pace. Technology makes our curriculum more nimble." Mr. Bauck said this is his 19th year as a school superintendent in the State of Minnesota and "it's never been a goal of mine to go out and ask taxpayers for money." Asked Councilmember Jim Crowley, "How do we compare to schools in the conference that we compete in, like Red Wing, New Prague, Northfield?
