Scarey Crows.  Hi, Sue.  I am not sure if this is too late or not, but I was wondering if you possibly had any room for this photo in your next paper.  I know that you like to receive interesting things that happen around the community.

This is a picture of an art class that took place here at the Victoria Field House called “Silly Scarecrows.”  The kids and parents had a wonderful time and made really wonderful scarecrows as well.

Front (l-r):  Sanjay Gerry (sitting on floor), Shanti Gerry (holding scarecrow).  Back:  Blake Kaufhold, Lizzie Hammers, Hannah Kaufhold.

         Thank you.

Kierra Leigh McNallan.  Pat and Michelle McNallan of St. Victoria Catholic Church in Victoria announce the birth of daughter Kierra Leigh on Wednesday, September 24th, the night of choir practice.  Kierra weighed 8 lbs. 1 ounce and was 21 3/4 inches long.  Her hat size was 14 1/2 inches.  The McNallans live in Chanhassen.

Mounted Posse. Several members of the Carver County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse received awards at a mounted clinic hosted by the Meeker County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse in Litchfield in September.

The clinic included training in crowd control, public vehicle and ambulance escort, search and rescue,  formation riding, equitation, defensive tactics, and individual and team obstacle courses.  There was also a mock “fleeing felon” chase scenario where the riders were required to navigate their horses through tight areas marked with crime scene tape, between trees and shrubs, and over bridges and jumps before handcuffing a dummy and using the police radio to report the incident.

Attendees from Carver County and their horses were (l-r):  Fay Buckentine with Charlie, Jim Liddy with Dixon, Denise Herntier with Peaches, June Hilgers with Oreo, Karolyn Kopp with Tasha, and Rosey Young with Boone.

To inquire about joining the Posses or for additional information, please contact the Carver County Sheriff’s Office at 952-361-1212.

Brussels in Bloom.  Hi, Sue.  I believe you are of “Belgonian” descent and thought you’d enjoy this, the beautiful “majic carpet” in Belgium.  It’s really an amazing arrangement, a “Carpet of Flowers” in the Grand-Place in Brussels.  Close to a million begonia flowers were used to create the 300 square metres carpet this week.  The pattern is based on a medieval carpet design.

Craftsman arrange the carpet by hand, directly onto the square’s cobblestones, without any soil.  Grass and tree bark were also used to provide colour.

The first Carpet of Flowers was created in 1971 as a way to promote begonias.  Each square metre of ground contains more than 300 flowers.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Thank you, S.A., for thinking of me.  I’ve stood in that very grand plaza, sans begonias.  It’s impressive even without the magic carpet.

Dressed in Zubaz.  The Victoria Fire Department would like to give a special thanks to Bob Truax, owner of Zubaz.  Bob donated his famous Zubaz brand pants to the Victoria Fire Department for its first annual softball game at this year’s Volksfest against the Victoria Vics.  The Victoria Fire Department would also like to give special thanks to Rick and Lois Plocher, owner of Floyd’s in Victoria, who sponsored this event and donated shirts to both teams.

Front (l-r): Tim Walsh, Mike Coumbe, Kari Nordeen, Troy Walsh. Standing: Andrew Heger, Brian Pulvemacher, John Wondock, Russ Wall, Dean Adams, Doug Jurek, Cling Matvick, Dave Shoger, Jeff Nordeen, Aaron Jurek, Rick Leuthner, Glen Row, Doug Schmieg, Gary Sohns.

         Thanks.
