TROPHY AT TUFFY'S TAVERN.  I know you like old photos and in my "spring cleaning" I ran across this one.  This picture was from April 1981 after our women's volleyball team sponsored by Tuffy's Tavern won first place in the Chaska Women's League and qualified for the State Tourney.  Thirty-five years ago!  Hard to believe.  This is Tuffy Kaufhold with the trophy, at Tuffy's Tavern in Victoria. .

CONGRATULATIONS, REBECCA JO.  I was at dinner to honor five people who were nominated for Teacher of the Year in Eastern Carver County Schools.  My Rebecca Jo Lyngaas Janes, right, an amazing 27-year teacher, was nominated by Victoria Elementary School.  Victoria Mayor Tom O'Connor, center, introduced her.  Another teacher won, but Becky wins my heart and vote, so I'm sending you a photo that I took of her last night with her husband Kelley Janes, left.  I hope you'll give her grand recognition in your great Gazette.  Thank you.  Blessings and love.

10th ANNUAL BOOGIE BLAST.  St. Joe's in Waconia celebrated their 10th Annual Boogie Blast fundraiser on Saturday, April 16th.  Funds raised help advance the quality of education offered at the school.  Our daughter Kaitie Heenie, an alumni of St. Joe's, donated her painting of the old St. Joseph's Catholic School in Waconia.  This year's fundraiser, which included numerous raffles and a silent auction, dinner and live music, took a look back at St. Joe's through school memories.

The picture is of the committee members who organized the Boogie Blast.  Front (l-r):  Jill Flood, Kim Heenie (Victoria), Dana Young.  Back:  Trevor Jager, Mike Sieve, Karyn Willenbring, Matt Sonnek, Lonnie Fette, Char Forcier, Principal Bruce Richards, John Hayes (Victoria).

St. Joe's has established a STEM-based education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and is being recognized for significant accomplishments.  Their STEM curriculum sets the school apart in the SW metro area, but also in the entire State of Minnesota and the Upper Midwest.  Students become well rounded through excellent athletic and community service opportunities.

BLUE RIBBON WINNERS.

This year, 67 poems were submitted to our 3rd Annual Poetry Contest.  The preliminary judging was done by four local poets.  Each selected five poems to be sent for final consideration.  Again this year, we are proud to have our Minnesota State Poet Laureate, Joyce Sutphen, choose the winning poems.  Joyce is a resident of Carver County and teaches at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.  Joyce is an          Honorary Lifetime Member of the Arts Consortium in recognition of her many distinguished awardS and outstanding achievement in poetry.  All winning poems and poets were recognized on the Arts Consortium of Carver County website, which is www.ArtsofCarverCounty.org.  Pictured (l-r):  Angela Hunt of Carver (Chaska Librarian), Janet Malotky (teacher at Waconia High School), Emma Aspelin of Victoria (student at Chanhassen High School), Mikaila Bosch (student at Clearwater Middle School in Waconia), Julia Barce (student at Victoria Elementary School).

The Consortium is a nonprofit organized to raise awareness of the arts and artist in the county and surrounding areas.  Our mission statement is to strengthen our community through the arts and cultivate the arts through the community.  Thank you to everyone who participated in our contest.

BAILEY FORCIER, daughter of Judy Forcier and the late Tim Forcier of Victoria, was named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the week in April.  A  2013 graduate of Benilde St. Margaret's High School, Bailey is a lacrosse junior at George Washington University in Newport News, Virginia.

Bailey led the Colonials to a pair of wins over A-10 foes Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University with 13 points on five goals and eight assists, plus nine draw controls.  She had two goals, three assists, and two draw controls in George Washington's 11-10 win at Richmond on Friday, April 16th.  She then keyed with GW's offensive outburst at VCU on Sunday with eight points on three goals and five assists plus six draw controls.

The five assists, eight points, and six draws were all career highs for the Victoria MN native.  In addition, Bailey's five assists matched the third highest single-game total in program history, while her eight points tied the seventh-most ever by a Colonial.  For the season, Bailey leads the Colonials with 19 goals, 17 assists, and 29 draw controls.
