GAZETTE

March 2012

To the Editor:

My wife Annette and I are transplants to Grand Forks, ND, from Philadelphia.  After practicing as a physician for 29 years in Grand Forks, I will be retiring this year.  Several years ago we purchased a house in Victoria in preparation for retirement.  We are excited about joining the community.

On occasion we have been able to enjoy your informative paper, the Victoria Gazette.  We have been remiss in not supporting it financially.  The issue in which you had a focus article on Tioga, ND, prompted me to remedy the situation.  Hence, enclosed is a check.

As a pilot, the fact that your son in law is also a pilot and the airport manager at Tioga was also of interest.  Now I plan to make a trip to that airport after I retire.  Those of us who fly for pleasure are always looking for an excuse to fly.  If I can do that this summer, you would be welcome to come along.  I want to thank you for the service you provide to our community.

         Sincerely,

         Jerry Smyser

         Soon to be Victoria, Minnesota

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Little planes scare me but the temptation is practically more than I can withstand.  I'll ponder your offer.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  Love you and love the Gazette.

To the Editor:

The McKnight Foundation invites nominations for the 2012 Virginia McKnight Binger Awards in Human Service.  McKnight will recognize up to six Minnesotans who have demonstrated an exceptional personal commitment to helping others in their communities but who have received little or no public recognition.

Echoing McKnight's mission statement, the Foundation seeks individuals who "attend, unite, and empower" others in communities throughout Minnesota.  Each awardee will receive $10,000 and will be honored at a ceremony in late summer.

A committee composed of human service professionals and volunteers from throughout Minnesota reviews nominations, checks references, and recommends candidates to the Foundation's board of directors.  Award recipients are notified in June and honored in August.

Nominations for this year are due by April 4th, 2012.  Visit www.mcknight.org/awards to read more about these awards and to submit your nominations.

To the Editor:

I always enjoy the Victoria Gazette.  Your visit to Tioga, ND, in February's Gazette, "Like the Klondike," was so interesting.  Thank you.  Your fishhook is on page 12 in Gina Maria's pizza ad.

To the Editor:

Thanks for sending the Gazette to our Florida home for four months.  Loved reading about Tioga in Like the Klondike.  I have a grandson working with his dad in Minot in construction.  Guess it is about an hour or so from Tioga and the work is related to the oil industry.  Lots of work and very good pay.  I suggested to Adam to work one year and he will be able to pay for college.

My next favorites were Germaine's great quotes.  What a dear lady she was.

Thanks for keeping me up to date with the happenings in Victoria.  You do such a great job.  And if I wouldn't be so darn busy, I would try again to find the fishhook.  My brother and I used to call each other to see if either one of us found it yet.

We did some fishing in the Gulf with my niece and husband, Lee and Irene Erhard, and finally caught fish to take home.  We had seven grouper and they have to be over 20 inches.  What a struggle to pull in and what great fun it was.  Something like walleye fishing up north.  Guess what we're eating during Lent.  Take care.

         Love, Bonnie Fritz
