The Victoria

GAZETTE

March 2012

by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette

The sky was gray, the ice was slippery, the day was cold but not formidable nor freezing.  In general, it replicated our 2011-2012 winter season which has been limping along like a snowshoe hare with a broken rabbit's foot.

And so the Victoria Fire Department arranged for people to be shuttled at the shore for the annual Ice Fishing Contest on Stieger Lake.  Because of our wimpy weather, the ice wasn't thick enough to support the usual lot of cars and trucks but, as is the wont in this northern clime, firefighters, fishermen, and friends took it all in stride and worked around it.

Services of the Koch School Bus company were employed to move bodies from downtown to the lake.  As Firefighter Justin Jurek reported, "We've used the buses in previous years and it has worked well for us.  With this year not being able to drive on the ice, we relied heavily on them and it worked out very well."

The ice was about 12 to 14 inches thick, said Justin, and it wasn't getting any thicker with temperatures in the upper 30's that Super Bowl Sunday of February 5th.  "We like to see ice as thick as 20 inches or more before we allow vehicles to park on the ice," he said.

Prior to the event's start, Victoria firefighters drilled approximately 1,000 holes for the nearly 1,000 people who frequent this popular annual outdoor occasion.  Average attendance might be around 900.

"Compared to other years, the amount of fish caught was low," said Justin,  "but we still had a good number that were caught and weighed."  Winners of the Predator Prizes were Morrie Leuthner of Victoria (3.42 lb. northern), Joe Heiland of Victoria (1.76 lb. northern), Sophia Strelmieks of Victoria (1.75 lb. bass), and Collin Crawford (1.44 lb. northern).

Winners of the Panfish Prizes were Cole D. (.25 lb. sunfish), Cory Schultz (.2 lb. sunfish), Bruce Schmid (.05 lb. perch), and Iyla Paulson (.05 lb. perch).

After all was said and done, the crowd gathered up their children and their fishing gear and disbursed, walking to nearby vehicles or boarding the buses to be shuttled at the shore to a parking lot upstream.  The focus then went from fishing to football and a different kind of feeding freezy.
