To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  So your dad's 89.  Good for him.  No doubt the result of all the farm work that he did.  I'm 87, in good health, retired, and loving it.  The best part is I get up in the morning with nothing to do and all day to do it.  By noon I'm half done.

By the way, what happened to the Mike Wartman column?  I miss him.

To the Editor:

Our daughter Michelle said she had a phone call from someone who had her name listed on the Hilgers-Carroll-Notermann-Timm photo.  She it was not her in the picture.  Ruthie Hilgers called me, wondering if I had been cleaning out pictures.  Actually, I had been.  I never heard from Dale and Rose.  Thought for sure I would with his bow hunting picture in there.

To the Editor:

As residents welcome the open water season, the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District encourage those that will be hiring lake service providers to utilize those that are lawfully permitted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR's mandatory training program was enacted by the State of Minnesota in 2011 to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.  It applies to all hired providers that install or remove water-related equipment (boats, docks, boat lifts, or other structures) from Minnesota bodies of water.

Permitted service providers will have a sticker displayed on their vehicle as well as documentation of their training.  The LMCD and the MCWD fully endorse the new law, which assists in containing existing AIS, such as zebra mussels in Lake Minnetonka, and prevents the introduction of new AIS in Lake Minnetonka and other water bodies within the watershed.

To the Editor:

Torrential weekend (May 31/June 1) rains across the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District have caused Lake Minnetonka to rise by 5.16 inches since Friday, May 30th, to an all-time record elevation of 930.64 feet above sea level on Monday, June 2nd.  That exceeds the previous record of 930.52 set in September 2002.

The Gray's Bay dam is discharging at its maximum rate of 300 cubic feet per second, and additional 262 cfs of water is flowing over the spillway north of the dam.  Minnehaha Creek is flowing out of its banks in many places.  Residents seeking sandbags to protect their property from rising water should contact their local city.

The latest rains have put the Twin Cities into second place for the wettest year-to-date since 1871.  Sunday's 2.37 inches of rain topped the record for most rain in a day previously set in 1944.

Saturday night's and Sunday's rain has overwhelmed the City of Mound's sanitary sewer system and forced the city to release untreated sewage onto land.  The city took this step to keep wastewater from backing up into the basements of an estimated 1,000 homes.

To the Editor:

We were very interested in the story about your parents.  Our home has been the Alamo Country Club since April 1999.  Our summer home is here in Victoria in the Stieger Lake condos.  We enjoy reading local news and events in the Gazette.

To the Editor:

I so loved the Claeys-Opdahl history story you did in honor of Uncle Joe's birthday.  There were lots of tidbits of information that were fun to learn.  What an amazing life your dad and mom have lived, and I wish them many more years.

         Love,

         Cousin Judy Novotny
