Surprised by Seventy by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette.  “It’s surprising that we’re both still here,” says Jeanne Thompson.  “Usually by this time, there is only one left to celebrate a 70th wedding  anniversary.”  Click on Front Page.

Picking the Mayor’s Mind by Sue Orsen.  Replied Mayor Tom O’Connor, “Your question, “Who’s in charge?’ when dealing with the Met Council is a great one.  It would be comforting if the answer was simple.”

Getting Up North Again by Chuck Freiberg, Up North Cabin Guy.  “Fortunately for us, May had five weekends this year and we were able to go up to the cabin.  We had a great time playing cards, eating, sampling some wine, and we went to a movie in downtown Siren.”

Johnson Home Down by Sue Orsen.  “The first home built on Main Street became the last home standing on Main Street.  More than 100 years old, it served at least five Victoria families over those years, most recently Ruth Johnson.”

Covering County Bases by Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik.  “Carver County offers a product reuse room at the Environmental Center where residents can look through hundreds of household products, all of which are free of charge.”

Healing Horses Therapy by Renee Regep, Victoria, MN.  “It’s been a busy year for Stacie Regep.  On May 10th she graduated magna cum laude from MN State University-Mankato with a B.A. degree in Communications Disorders.  Back in January she started an equine therapy business.”

Tuck Pointing the Historic Church by Sue Orsen.  “The Historic St. Victoria Catholic Church was built in 1870 and maintenance work continues.  The task is to tuck point the entire north face this summer.”

Virginia Stowe, 77, died Monday, April 28th.

Madelyn Guettler, 87, died Sunday, April 27th.

Dan Workman, 80, died Friday, May 2nd.

Remember When Bill and Marcia Smith suffered a total loss of their home at Deer Run when it was hit by a bolt of lightning?  It was May 30th, 1998.  The first horrific tornadic weather that spring of 1998 occurred two weeks earlier, on May 15th, bringing much of Victoria to its knees.

Vocabulary in Victoria by Sue Orsen.  The word:  “Oeillade.”  The sentence:  “She deftly cocked a coquettish oeillade in my direction — one appraising glance from those glorious eyes, one approving smile from those delectable lips — and I was vanquished.”

Golf is Cool by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro.  “A person can be warm and cool.  Arnold Palmer is/was warm and cool.  Arnie treats people with warmth and respect, and yet he isn’t needy.  He’s cool.”

Discover Victoria Day by Sue Orsen.  “It was one of our first beautiful spring days here in Victoria.  Approximately 400 citizens and community people and 70 vendors visited the Victoria Recreation Center on May 17th.”

Victoria Lions Swear in New Officers by Sue Orsen.  “Outgoing President Brian Tjenstrom thanked many people by name for their help in making his job easier, and he named all the many fundraisers and events conducted last year by the Victoria Lions, all of them successful.”

Are You Slouching by Kathe Matthews, Carver County Poet.  “Standing together before a mirror, our height differences became very apparent.  At nearly 5’11”, my son had fare surpassed me with his recent growth spurt.  In disbelief, he looked at me and asked if I was slouching.”

Keep an Eye Out for AIS by Trevor Born, MCWD.  “The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is watching closely for any new aquatic invasive species infestations this season, but we can’t be everywhere at once.  Help keep our eyes on the ground!”

New Cycle Shop by Joseph Lieser.  “Text Ron and Rose Saltz opened their new shop in Victoria over Mother’s Day weekend.  They sell motorcycle apparel.  Rose does a lot of her own work.”
