FOUR FROM THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

VISITING THE VICTORIA CITY COUNCIL IN MAY

Four members of the Carver County Sheriff's Department attended the May 23rd meeting of the Victoria City Council, including Sheriff Jim Olson, elected in the fall of 2010, his Chief Deputy William Blair Anderson, and Victoria Town Deputies Josh Baker (days) and Jeff Stratton (nights).  Another deputy who works in Victoria, Mark Randall, was not able to be in attendance.

"I look forward to working with the Council over these next four years," said Sheriff Olson.  "We'll be working very hard to keep costs down over these next four years.  Chief Deputy Blair Anderson is from Dakota County and he started February 1st."

"Victoria is, has been, and will continue to be a safe place to live," said the Sheriff.  "It really is a wonderful community that we live in here.  I do encourage folks to protect themselves.  Take valuables out of your cars when you leave them parked outside.  Take out your garage door openers.  As school lets out, be careful driving around the county as we go through summer."

Asked Councilmember Kim Roden, "Every year cyclists ride on Smithtown Road and when the sunset hits our eyes on the way home from work, I always wonder if the bikers really know how hard it is to see them.  Have you got any advice for us?"

"Be careful," stated Sheriff Olson.  "Bikers have a right to the road.  Smithtown is a winding road.  Bicyclists and cars both need to exercise due caution."

Mayor Mary Thun asked about the upcoming 2012 budget for the Carver County Sheriff's Department.  "Initially I don't see us asking for extra positions," replied Sheriff Olson.  "We don't want to burden the city with that.  We'll be working on a policing plan for the City of Victoria."

Stated Chief Deputy Anderson, "I am a firm believer in the service aspect of what it is we are charged to do.  The protection part, while important, I think is secondary regarding the service aspect.  One begets the other, as far as I'm concerned.  And so to that end, I have patterned my career along those lines.  It is a privilege for me to put on a uniform every day and to serve the public, and that's not going to change because the geography has changed for me.  If there is anything we can do to be of assistance, you need just call.  The door is always open and we will always answer."

ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR RECREATION CENTER

TO ASSIST WITH  DECISIONS FOR VICTORIA ARENA

Council approved appointments to the Victoria Recreation Center Advisory Committee.  Function of this new committee is to have "advisory responsibility for the Arena, such as to advise the parties on issues arising out of Arena operations including but not limited to management issues, maintenance plan development and implementation, facility rental issues, and the determination of apportionment of responsibility for costs attributed to the Arena."

Membership of this committee includes seven people:  2 members selected and approved by the Victoria City Council (Park & Rec Director Ann Manhke, Councilmember Kim Roden), 2 members selected and approved by School District 112 (DeeDee Kahring and Jackie Johnston), citizen members chosen by the City of Victoria (Heather Cole) and School District 112 (Mary Erickson).

An example of the committee's responsibilities is to review operations and capital budget of the Arena.  Also, the committee will help create a fund for major repairs and improvements to the Arena such as the roof, exterior walls, and major exterior improvements.
