The Victoria

GAZETTE

June 2011

To the Editor:

I want to thank my loving family for the great party they had for me for my 90th birthday.  They did a super job.  I want to thank all the people who came to help me celebrate.  Thank you for all the many cards and  gifts.  It was a wonderful day.  Love to all.

         Mae Schmid

         Victoria, Minnesota

To the Editor:

I was thrilled to get my Gazette this morning and see the Diethelm headlines.  Thank you so much for a wonderful article.  I really loved the pictures you included.  What a beautiful woman our mother was.  This is a great article for our children to read.  I'm not sure I remember everything that my sister Elizabeth told about those early years, which was a very good read for me too.  Thank you for keeping us old timers up to date with the Victoria news.

To the Editor:

I am writing to let you know that after four and a half years at the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, I recently accepted a position with the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization to lead and manage the water quality monitoring department.  I will have opportunity to work with stormwater and main stem river monitoring and modeling.  I will also continue to work with the U of M, as adjunct faculty to advise graduate students.

It was professionally and personally rewarding to work for MCWD and interact with so many in the field of natural resources and water resources.  I thank you and everyone else whom I came in contact with while working at MCWD for the help, support, and guidance.

To the Editor:

Just in case you haven't heard, I am pleased to report that Otto Dreydoppel, former pastor here in Victoria at the Lake Auburn Moravian Church, has been named chaplain of Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.  This is from my contacts in Nazareth.

To the Editor:

Senior Citizens make up one-twelfth of the population in Minnesota, but are often disproportionately targeted for fraud over the telephone and at their doorstep.  The Attorney General's Office gives senior citizens some advice when it comes to unsolicited callers and telemarketers.

Don't be swayed by unknown callers that try to scare you into purchasing security alarms, medical safety products, or insurance policies, for example.  Hang up or shut the door.  It is not rude nor impolite to firmly tell salespeople you are not intereseted.

Don't let strangers into your home.  Know your rights.  Remember you have only three days to cancel most door to door sales involving personal goods or services.  Read the fine print.  Never sign anything nor give out your banking information to strangers.

Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau.  Don't  give out personal information such as your credit card number to someone you don't know.  Nothing is ever free.

To the Editor:

A big thank you for your part in helping to celebrate our dear friend Mae Schmid's 90th birthday.  You helped celebrate by all those pictures of Mae and her husband in the Gazette and telling about her upcoming party and then those dress-up pictures from "Remember When."  Mae's family outdid themselves to make a special party for her.  It was delightful.

I also have to say that I loved Elizabeth and Julianne's memories and pictures.  I could relate too well to those days gone by.  Wow!  It brought back my youth, even to the Saturday night baths in the big tub in the kitchen.

Thanks, Sue, for keeping us all updated on the past, present, and future.  Your paper keeps us up to date on the comings and goings.  God bless you and Al and all your family.
