Letters Continued

June 2010

To the Editor:

Okay, what can we say when we open the newspaper and see our son all over the pages next to the Madonna!  Maybe, “Wow!”  This was the first time I saw the Madonna, the Ave Maria, Mary, the Mother of Our Lord, and all the other names she has.  She is so beautiful.  You did a great job of directing and David did a great job of following, as best I know.  We are all anxious to see the end result in front of the new church.

Thank you so much for choosing David to make the sculpture of Mary and for donating it to St. Victoria.  We are all very blessed and know your heart was truly behind the whole venture.  Since 1963, when we moved here, and soon after, David was going with the kids up to Grandlund’s Studio here in Victoria and got hooked on making clay models.  Mr. Grandlund was his main man at that time in his life and for many years to come.

You and Allan are assets to the parish.  We know the years of music you’ve shared with us all, even from the time when I was in the choir.  Yikes, that has been a while!

You have kept us up to date on the daily living of Victoria and all the older folks and now the new younger ones.  What a blast!  We want to thank you for the wonderful write-up and allowing us to enjoy some of the excitement of the Madonna.  God bless you and all your family.

         Sincerely,

         Dave and Loretta Kocka

To the Editor:

After reading the story about your journey with Our Blessed Mother (Ave Maria), were there times when you felt she was alive and enjoying the ride?  What a wonderful journey that must have been.  Can’t wait to see her.

To the Editor:

I met the Park Ranger for Three Rivers Park on Saturday, May 8th.  He sometimes catches speeders on County Road 11 and parks his squad across the street from our home.  I told him a bit about the area and that my great grandfather had come from Cincinnati in 1854.  He mentioned that he had a connection with Cincinnati as he played for the Cincinnati Bengals in early 2000 and had played football for Lou Holtz at Notre Dame.  His name is Mike Doughty.  Does anyone know of him or how good a player he was?

To the Editor:

Five generations of congratulations to the Happs on the arrival of twin grandkids born on Great Grandpa Don’s birthday.

My twin brothers Dave and Dan, fraternal twins, were born March 11th, 1954, the day after my dad’s 31st birthday.  Mom was 27.  Of course, according to Mom, she said when the twins were born that Dad said not every baby is born with two heads.

Don Happs’ mom Margaret used to live in Talheim Apartments in Chaska where I am the last 13 years.  Margaret Happ and her husband Joe rented farmland from Mom’s grandparents.  Margaret remembered Mom as a baby.  Margaret used to use the staircase in the apartment building even when she was 100 years old.  She zipped up and down like she was 25 years old.  She would say that’s good exercise.  She could dance circles around me.  I haven’t been able to do stairs since my injury in 1996.

Wow, 20 years since Kelly and Margaret Hanson moved to Deer Run.  Before that they were backyard neighbors to my aunt and uncle, Fran and Ray Schmieg.  Kelly’s mom Margery Hanson was our backyard neighbor when we lived across the road from Bill Schalow’s (Margery’s brother) farmland.  Kelly and Margaret’s kids Lisa and Erik always were at Grandma Margery and Grandpa Carl’s house.

We were the last original residents of our street when Dad remodeled and sold the house in 2004.  Fifty years in the same house.  I’ve gone by there in my power chair and I can still picture Mom in the garden, Bill Schalow on his red International Harvester tractor, and our dog Missy attacking the groundhogs.
