Last week one night we ate a good batch of sunnies freshly caught by Chuck and Carol Schmidt, freshly fileted by husband Allan, and freshly fried by yours truly.  They were delicious, probably the first time we’ve had sunfish since Darel Geske died.  Our friend and neighbor Darel was great for fishing and fish fries in the neighborhood, and I thought of him as we ate our fill for supper.

My filets were not as tasty as Darel’s because I didn’t drench them or coat them in batter before frying, and probably didn’t use as much salt.  I just made sure they were clean and dry, then dropped them unadorned into the buttery black cast iron fry pan and used lemon pepper for seasoning.  But they were sweet, nonetheless, and my mouth waters in the retelling.

One thing I do have to say, is that it certainly made a mess of my kitchen.  Next time, if we are ever so fortunate to have a next time, we’ll do it outside like Darel often did.  Splatters of grease all over my new kitchen were a little bit disheartening; however it wiped up well.

I am always heartened by the number of people who keep looking for the fishhook that I hide in each and every issue of the Gazette.  Whether or not you find it is almost secondary to the fact that you look for it.  Reminds me of something I often say:  “If you look for the truth, you will find it.”  Those who don’t find it, aren’t looking for it, at least not with the intensity and seriousness of a true detective.

At this moment I’m playing in the minnow bucket and pulling out the name of George Braunwarth of Waconia who found the fishhook last month wrapped around the dog’s tail in the Vic’s Bar and Grill ad on page 8.  Congratulations, George.  I’m reminded that you spell your name differently than the Braunworth’s here in Victoria!

I hid a fishhook in this issue of the Gazette too.  If you find it, drop a line to Sue@VictoriaGazette.com or use P.O. Box 387, Victoria MN 55386 and sinker in the mail.  Then you’ll be dropped into the minnow bucket till the next monthly drawing.  In the meantime, keep a “sunny” disposition.
