VICTORIA FLATS WOULD BE “A GAME CHANGER”

80 APARTMENTS PROPOSED FOR DOWNTOWN

On June 13th, Council considered the sketch plat for Victoria Flats, previously discussed in a council workshop setting on April 25th and reported in the May issue of the Gazette.  No action is taken until the developers, The Beard Group, bring in the preliminary plat.  The Beard Group is proposing to purchase the city parking lot across from City Hall on Stieger Lake Lane plus the Braunworth property on the southern edge of that parking lot.

CROSSINGS AT CHURCH LAKE IN VICTORIA

65 APTS PROPOSED FOR INDEPENDENT SENIORS

On June 27th Council considered the sketch plat for Crossings at Church Lake.  It includes a 65-unit senior apartment building, four single family lots that front on Victoria Circle, and other property that has potential for development.  No action is taken at the sketch plat stage.  Currently owned by the St. Victoria Catholic Church, the proposed location is down the hill, directly behind the church cemetery on County Road 11.

WHISPERING HILLS APPROVED FOR 215

NEW HOUSEHOLD UNITS IN VICTORIA

On June 27th council voted 4-0 to approve the rezoning, conditional use permit, and preliminary plat for Whispering Hills, a new 39.5-acre development east of downtown.  Formerly home of the late Tony and Sally Kerber, it's been called the Lano-Burau property after the Kerber daughters, Joanne Lano and Joyce Burau.  The plan shows 24 buildings, each of them a six-unit townhome not unlike those next door on the east side in Madelyn Creek, plus 71 "detached" townhomes for a total of 215 new households in Victoria

ENERGY HAS PRICE IN WAYS SEEN AND UNSEEN

OVERHEAD OR UNDERGROUND IS BIGGEST ISSUE

Council held a workshop on June 27th and a public informational meeting on June 28th.  Both gatherings centered on Xcel Energy and how best to fill the growing needs of a growing community.  Poles and powerlines provide electricity to maintain the grid, but they also provide visual pollution along roadsides in a city of lakes and parks.  A decision on burying or not burying the new powerlines could be made at the July 11th city council meeting.

ALPHABET JUNCTION PLAN TO RELOCATE

TO PROPERTY NEXT TO THE DAIRY QUEEN

Alphabet Junction is proposing to purchase the Gregory property adjacent to the Victoria Dairy Queen on County Road 11 North for their childcare business.  They are currently located in the Notermann Building in downtown Victoria where it's getting difficult for parents dropping off and picking up kids to deal with the increase in trafficThe problem at the Gregory property is the sewer situation.  Explained City Engineer Cara Geheren, "City sewer is not readily available to it, but city sewer is needed to redevelop the property."
