The Scoop

at City Hall

Did you know that the third leading cause of death in the United States is due to the medical mistakes of doctors?  So states Dr. Marty Makaray, surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  He also reports that one in every five medications, tests, and procedures as prescribed by doctors is unnecessary.

Heart disease and cancer are listed as the number one and number two causes of death in the USA.  If we are able to somehow avoid number one and number two in the Lottery of Life, it is disconcerting to consider we could easily fall prey to number three.  Doctors and their mistakes should not be on the list for causes of death in the United States.

Did you know that Great Britain voted on June 23rd to become a free and independent nation?  I thought that happened long ago.  Our mother country, the nation from which the thirteen original colonies freed themselves in 1776, came to be itself enslaved under the European Union and has now chosen freedom once again.

Did you know that "nation" is a biblical word, a biblical concept, older than the hills, found in Genesis and many other ancient books?  According to Wikipedia, as well as my outstanding American Heritage Dictionary bound in leather with 2,140 printed pages, nation is defined as a community of people with a shared history, culture, origin, language, and land.

For a couple hundred years, most of the USA had a shared history, culture and origin, and the people came to speak a common language.  Our ancestors become inculturated in this land.  It seems not to be that way anymore.  Many people in this land now retain their own culture and language.  It's a different kind of immigration today, a different kind of nation.  The melting pot is becoming a cooking kettle.

Did you know that Dr. James Dobson and his Focus on the Family have called for a boycott of Target stores?  I can tell you that ever since Target approved of men going into their women's bathrooms because of their particular persuasion that day, I have (so far) not purchased one item at Target Chanhassen, Target Eden Prairie, Target Waconia, or Target Minnetonka.  I miss Target.

Did you know there are enough senior projects on the horizon in Victoria that when Allan and I get old, either together or alone, we might have a choice to stay in our hometown of Victoria?  It's a wonderful thing.  We've already purchased our final resting place in the St. Victoria Catholic Cemetery, but until we get there it's good to have options for in-between.   I've watched generations of old friends move in their twilight years to places in Waconia, Chaska, Excelsior, Shakopee, Chanhassen, and other locations away from home because there was no place for them in Victoria.

Did you know there are over 50,000 fast food chains in the United States?  Seems you're hardly a town if you don't have at least one.  Each of the hosts on one of my regular evening TV shows, entitled "The Five," revealed their fast food favorites last week and my ears perked up.  I've always been a fast food fan.

Greg Gutfield loves White Castle.  Eric Bolling loves Subway.  Juan Williams  loves Popeye's.  Kimberly Guilfoyle loves McDonalds.  Dana Perino loves Chic-fil-A.

I personally love McDonald's, Burger King, and Arby's.  The word "love" is a bit overboard, but "enjoy" and "prefer" and "like" don't hit the mark for me.

Did you know that 80% of people in prison are children of unwed parents?  I recently heard that statistic from Father Mitch Pacwa on EWTN.  I thought of it again when I was reading Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik's column this month.  On page 27, it's entitled, "Mental Health Issues Prevalent in County Jail Populations."

There is a correlation between stable married parents and the mental health of their children.  According to the American Public Health Association, "Childhood environment can have a lasting impact on health."  But I couldn't find anybody that would go further than that and tie it all together with the jail population and unwed parents.  Probably because it wouldn't be politically correct to point that out.

Did you know there are 2,900 cases of the Zika virus in the USA today, according to the HHS Secretary?  The Feds and their friends in the "popular" media talk a lot about Zika and mosquitoes.  When is the last time they gave us numbers on STD's?  In 2014, there were 1.4 million cases of chlamydia in the USA reported by the Center for Disease Control, the highest number ever.  Promiscuity is often related to unwed parents and jail statistics.  There's a new book out by Eric Bolling, the guy whose favorite fast food is Subway.  It's called Wake Up America.  It connects the dots.
