BEHIND EVERY GOOD WOMAN IS A GOOD MAN

DAVE THUN  AND JERRY MOJA WELCOME BACK

THEIR WIVES AFTER 10 YEARS SERVING VICTORIA

Mayor-Elect Tom O'Connor went to the podium on December 10th to talk about the two city councilmembers who did not seek re-election this past fall -- Mayor Mary Hershberger Thun and Councilmember Kim Roden -- to present themn awards and speak of their accomplishments.

"Together they put in over 20 years," said the Mayor-Elect, "including Kim's time on the Planning Commission and Mary's four years on the Council before being elected mayor three times.  I've figured out that Kim has read 2,525 agenda statements and Mary has read 3,175 agenda statements.  Both started about the same time when the population of Victoria was about 5,000 and now it's about 8,000."

Mayor-Elect O'Connor cited many projects that occurred during their tenure -- developments, new buildings, new businesses, annexations, water treatment plant, fire station expansion, major sanitary sewer projects, reconstruction of Hwy 5, and other projects.  "That's almost a history of this city," he said.

Then he asked the two outgoing councilmembers to recall a memorable moment from the past 10 years.  Replied Councilmember Roden, "It's been more of a journey than a destination.  We went from a village to a professional city."

Replied Mayor Thun, "I knew things were on the way when we took those two old houses down.  Most of all, I'd proud of all the citizen involvement.  I'm proud of all those who came forward to serve."

Mayor-Elect O'Connor asked another question:  "Have you any advice for the future council?"

Said Councilmember Roden, "Remember that residents are shareholders in this town.  Second, remember that it's other people's money you're spending."

Replied Mayor Thun, "You gotta read the packets!  Second, out of respect for the staff, let them do their work.  Third, continue citizen involvement."

Mayor-Elect O'Connor thanked them both for their many years of service to the City of Victoria.

Then Mayor Thun waxed nostalgic.  "Thank you to my husband, my dog, the City of Victoria.  I look forward to continue serving you in other ways.  On December 31st I'm a public citizen again  and not an elected official.  Thank you to the staff who tolerated a lot of questions from us, especially me.  Merry Christmas.  Happy Holidays.  Happy New Year, a Prosperous New Year.  Enjoy and be safe."
