GAZETTE

January 2013

by Sue Orsen

An overview of 2012 shows that it was a year of salutations in Victoria.  We saluted -- greeted and recognized -- people and events in many ways throughout the year, and those salutations seemed to fall for the Gazette into five different areas, all related, of course.  Everything is related to everything else, not just in Victoria but in the world and in life.  Being related, however, is not the same as being relative. There are absolutes.

We absolutely needed to have Highway 5 reconstructed in Victoria.  We absolutely needed to keep downtown Victoria vibrant.  We absolutely needed to honor those who served Victoria well.  We absolutely needed to keep our Fire Department equipped.  And we absolutely needed to continue saluting the flag of the United States of America as we try to keep it one nation under God.

The Gazette is pleased to remind readers in this New Year's edition what has gone before us, as it continues to bring you more of what lies ahead.   Happy New Year!

SALUTING HIGHWAY 5

In 2012 we saluted the reconstruction of Highway 5 long before it occurred, because of planning, design, and preparation, but it was 2012 when Victoria actually lived through the long hot summer of road closures, detours, and inconveniences, not to mention many weeks of continuous temperatures above 90 degrees, often hovering near 100 degrees.  The dry weather meant no construction delays due to rain (maybe once) and allowed for the large project to be competed on time.  Construction began in Victoria (there were also improvements east of Victoria city limits) in June 2012 and was completed on August 30th, 2012.  It included repair of the Sink Hole, replacement of the Highway 5 Bridge, and turn lane improvements at several intersections.  Highway 5 was open to traffic on August 31st, 2012, exactly as planned.  We salute MnDOT and the new Highway 5.

SALUTING THE NEW FIRE TRUCK

In 2012 we saluted the new fire engine when it was grandly introduced to the City of Victoria on July 23rd, 2012.  It was a beauty from all sides.  The engine was ordered in August of 2011, and the Victoria Fire Department took delivery on July 19th, 2012.  It cost $418,909.  It carries a 10-foot attic ladder, a 14-foot roof ladder, a 17-foot utility ladder, and a 26-foot extension ladder.  You might call it a ladder truck.  It also holds 700 gallons of water.  Thank you, Victoria Firefighters, for all you do to keep our community safe and protected.  We salute the Victoria Fire Department and the new Fire Engine.

SALUTING THE U.S. FLAG

In 2012 we saluted the flag of the United States of America many, many times  -- including prior to the start of every single meeting of the Victoria City Council.  Sometimes the local boy scouts and girl scouts showed up to lead the councilmembers, city staff, and audience in saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.  When we salute the U.S. Flag, we salute all that it stands for, including "one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all."  We salute the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, and the U.S. Flag.

SALUTING INDIVIDUALS

In 2012 we saluted many men, women, and children in Victoria who were recognized and honored for achievements in their venues.  Untold numbers were noted within the many pages of the Victoria Gazette throughout the year.  The Gazette is always happy to recognize Victoria people as well as family and friends of Victoria people.  Among others, we salute these six individuals.

Mayor Mary Thun and Councilmember Kim Roden each contributed at least ten years of service to the City of Victoria and chose not to run for re-election this fall.  They were honored and recognized on December 10th at the last Victoria City Council meeting of 2012.  We salute Mayor Thun and Councilmember Roden.

Fred Plocher was honored and recognized by the Deer Run Board of Governors in June 2012 for his vision and achievement.  It was back in 1987 that Fred purchased the McKnight property, proposed its annexation into the City of Victoria, and created the Deer Run development, one of the most successful golf communities in Minnesota.  Deer Run Golf Club opened for play in 1989.  We salute Fred Plocher.

Tom Walsh retired this past June after more than 38 years in the Victoria Fire Department.  He was honored and recognized on December 10th at the City Council meeting.  We salute Tom Walsh.

Coach Mike Poppitz and the Victoria Vics won their first-ever Minnesota State Baseball Tournament Championship in 2012 and were honored and recognized by many across the state as well as by Victoria  city councilmembers and staff.  We salute Mike and the Vics.

Tim Walsh, a 25-year Victoria Firefighter, served as the Victoria Fire Chief since 2005,  In February 2012 he stepped down from that top position to have time to acquire his Bachelor's Degree and rearrange priorities.  Tim continues to work in the Fire Department in other capacities.   We salute Tim Walsh.
