January 2013

Celebrating 100 Years. My mom's name is Marjorie (Marge) Henrich.  She was born on the shores of Silver Lake, Jessenland Township in Sibley County, Minnesota, on January 22nd, 1913, the youngest of four children, equal parts Irish and German heritage.

Mom will celebrate her 100th birthday with family and friends on Sunday, January 27th, 2013.  She and my father, Marcellus, raised six daughters; I am number five.  My mom lives on her own in an apartment doing her own cooking, cleaning, and laundry.  She recently sold her car as she decided that she would not renew her driving license on her birthday.

Mom is still alert mentally and spry physically, even though she broke her hip last year.  Best of all, Mom has maintained her faith, optimism for the future, and her sense of humor.  We originally suggested Sunday, January 20th, for her celebration.  Her reply was that if she died between Sunday and Tuesday, she would not have made it to 100.  When it was noted that dying between Tuesday and the following Sunday was also a possibility, her reply was that we would then be having a very nice funeral lunch.  One of my favorite lessons from my mom is "You'll never regret being kind."

Outstanding 2012 Conservationists. Clarence and Steve Kelzer, left, of the Victoria and Chaska area, along with their wives Dorothy and Barbara, center, were honored as Outstanding Conservationists at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Bloomington December 2-4, 2012.  They were selected by the Carver Soil and Water Conservation District for the award.

According to Ted Beise, Chair of the Carver SWCD Board, the Kelzers were recognized for a variety of reasons.  Clarence took over the family farm in 1937, during the dust bowl era, also known as the Dirty Thirties.  He struggled with the unforgiving topography and the winding and hilly land he was trying to make a living off of.  In the early 1940's, Clarence started installing contour strips, which helped convert the fields into completely farmable, crop producing land.  The gullies went from washouts to productive soil that held in place while producing crops.

Clarence's son Steve took over the family farm over 20 years ago and is the 5th generation of Kelzer's to run this land.  As you drive by their farm, you can see that Steve still maintains these contour strips that his father installed almost 70 years ago.  Their fields have far less erosion compared to fields with similar topography and soils.

Happy 90th Birthday, Wilfy. Wilfred Plocher turned 90 years old on Sunday, December 16th, and his family held an Open House Birthday Party for him at his townhome on Lake Waconia on Saturday, December 15th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.  The birthday cake is being held by Theo Thomas, a grandson from Washington.

Wilfy's father E.B. Plocher was the first employee and manager of the Victoria Lumber store (1910).  Wilfy, the second manager, retired in 1984 at the age of 62, when he and his wife moved from their home in the Krey Addition on Hwy 5, where theirs was the first one built in 1957, to the townhome in Waconia.  He had said, "Inez and I will always call Victoria home."  They had four children. Judy (Kaaua), Susan (Thomas), Randy (died at age 9), and Michael (died at 10 days).  Inez died in June 2002 at the age of 81.

Among other activities, Wilfy is an active member of the Victoria Lions Club (he is a charter member) and the Lake Auburn Moravian Church where he has served many positions.  He was a member of the Victoria Commercial Club, the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, the Victoria Horseshoe Club, and a regular of the local Victoria Coffee Club.
