How many of you have an ice-fishing house sitting in your backyard waiting for the ice on Lake Minnetonka or Mille Lacs or Lake Bavaria to freeze over?

The best thing about winter, in my opinion, is a house on land with an automatic thermostat and furnace and hot water heater and quilts and blankets in front of a fireplace. In other words, the best things about Minnesota winters occur indoors for this non-winter loving soul.

But I happen to know somebody who had an ice-fishing house sitting in their backyard waiting for the ice to freeze over on Lake Sakakaweah, and it just got transported to that lake on January 4th. These people are very closely related to me. My daughter and her family out in the hinterland of Tioga, ND, will be spending some time on Lake Sakakaweah this winter, catching cold fish together. No details yet from personal experience, but just give me a little time. It sleeps six and that means there’s room for me and Allan. And it’s warm, I’m told, and very comfortable.

In the meantime, it was warm when I went fishing in the minnow bucket here last week and pulled out Marlene Bentz of Excelsior to win the $10 drawing. Congratulations, M.B.!
