Bright Lights of 2009 |
by Sue Orsen Maybe you recall that 2008 was a year of demolition in Victoria: C.H. Carpenter Lumber went down, the homes along Quamoclit went down, the Victoria Cafe went down, the Acorn House went down. Well, that demolition prepared us for 2009. Looking at Victoria’s 2009 from a distance, albeit a short distance, identifies several construction projects and development in our little community in the business and government sectors. We see that although 2009 was a time of local and national economic difficulties, many which continue into 2010, several bright lights in Victoria came to shine among the shadows. This issue of the Gazette focuses on what I believe are the biggest and brightest lights of Victoria’s 2009, those lights that shine in our galaxy like a Big Dipper for the community as a whole. They reflect what transpired in one short year, in one small city, in one brief passing of time together. There are many bright lights not being plucked from 2009 for this first Gazette of the new year, yet they are distinctive in Victoria’s sky and they shine regularly -- like those annual Victoria Concerts in the Park; the annual Victoria Lions Tournament, Pancake Breakfasts, and Bloodmobiles; the annual Victoria Fire Department Fishing Contest and Open House; the annual Victoria Volksfest. All of the above shine continuously in Sue’s Album, which is located at www.VictoriaGazette.com. Other bright lights twinkle in this little corner of the universe -- like regular Victoria church events that shine on common ground (ice cream socials, rummage sales, festivals), like regular Victoria city government events that shine on democracy (public hearings, workshops, meetings and motions), like regular school and extracurricular events that shine on youth (open houses, concerts, academics, athletics), like regular family and friend events that outshine all of the above (eating, sleeping, living, working, and playing together). Several of those lights also shine continuously at www.VictoriaGazette.com. I hope that 2010 is filled with many more bright lights for Victoria, for the nation, and for people of good will throughout the world. |

Poppitz Field at Lions Park not only got itself named in 2009, after its biggest volunteer (Coach Mike Poppitz), it got remodeled underground with the construction of an elaborate irrigation system made possible with volunteer labor as well as donations from Victoria Lions and Holy Family Catholic High School. |
The Metropolitan Council pursued major reconstruction of the regional sewer system through Victoria in 2009 and received an earful from the Victoria City Council when communication with citizens broke down. |
Deep Baveja remodeled the inside of his Hi-5 convenience store in 2009 to accommodate the Subway franchise he purchased. Now in one stop, people can get Subway sandwiches along with a tank full of gas, a bottle of milk, and a six-pack of beer. |
