To the Editor:

I do not live in Victoria.  I was born and raised there, however, and I worked for C.H. Carpenter Lumber Company for 27 years.  I also belong to the Victoria Lions for 40+ years.  So I consider Victoria home.

Back in 1966 the Commercial Club decided to push for a new City Hall.  Jerry Schmieg, Kenny Diethelm, and I were to look into the matter and come up with a design and cost estimate for a new City Hall.  Back then it was simple to do any building.  There was no inspection of any kind like there is today.  You just hired a good reliable contractor and told them to go ahead.  The City Hall that resulted has  been put to many uses and served its purpose well.  Now it comes time to move on.

I do not have an MBA or a PhD or a college degree, but I have learned over the last 86 years to use good old common sense.  The ideal location for new City Offices is on the east side of the Victoria Field House Complex.  Site preparation would be done at a minimal cost and there is room for parking.

The City Council seems to be in a rush to get out of the old location.  I know there is some mildew and rot in the building, but that is not going to cause a plague.  It would make more sense to stay in the old location until new City Offices were built.

I understand the city wants to spend $200,000 to bring in temporary facilities.  Wouldn’t it make more sense to use that money towards the cost of new City Offices?

I know a lot of people agree with me and I am sure some don’t.  If somebody wants to chew me out, my phone number is 952-442-5357.  Thank you.

To the Editor:

Holy mackerel!  Christmas time already gone.  The two wise men on page 15

in the December Gazette might have to borrow some well digging tools from Leuthner Well to go ice fishing.  The fishhook is on a wise man’s cane.  Maybe they will get a boot full of water like I did when I was 13.  My glasses fogged up and I couldn’t see too well and there went my right foot into the Clayhole’s ice fishing hole!  I got baptized plenty that day.  With soggy socks and boot lining I sat in the pavilion by a heater to dry off and I never went anywhere near ice fishing holes again.  Once was enough for me.

To the Editor:

I especially liked the Cowboy Correspondent letter and your response in the December issue.  Cute pictures, too.  I found the fishhook on page 16, over the top of the shepherd’s staff in the Leuthner Well ad.

To the Editor:

Today I took time to rest my feet and pick up the Gazette to catch up.  I always read it from cover to cover and was so very much impressed with your theme in the December issue.

Your feature story [“He Traveled Afar”] took me back to just over one year ago in November when I took a trip with a group of 120 parishioners from my church to go to Egypt, Jordan, and the Holy Land.  That was a great article and you chose some great photos of Paul Kohls and his trip.

I also took a trip to Israel in 1993, but this last time I got to see more of the Old City since they are continually excavating.  In 1993 we also ate at a kibbutz.

My disappointment was Bethlehem.  In 1993 it was a quiet little neat town.  We also visited Rachel’s grave then.  But last year when we were in Bethlehem it was dirty with garbage stacked everywhere in streets and alleys.  Since 1994 it has been controlled by Palestinians because it is part of the West Bank.  We visited the large Souvenir Shop that is owned by  a Palestinian family in Bethlehem.

Sorry, Sue, that I didn’t get your instructions for the Christmas issue of the Gazette, about the early deadline and submitting a photo from our childhood days.  I don’t have a computer.

Congratulations on your new granddaughter, Sophia.  I love that name.
