COMMUNITY

Victoria residents gathered in community for several annual events in 2007, including the Victoria Lions Tournament, the Victoria Concerts in the Park, the Victoria Volksfest, and the Victoria Ice Fishing Contest.

Another large community gathering occurred at the Victoria Field House in May, 2007, for a Town Hall Meeting where residents took the opportunity to express their views on the future of the Field House.  Since there was overwhelming support to maintain city ownership of the Field House, city councilmembers respond-ed accordingly.  The Town Hall Meeting led to a partnership with School District 112, formally approved in December, 2007.  The School District will build a second sheet of ice at the Field House location and lease the Victoria Ice Arena.  Read about it on the City Scoop pages of this issue of the Victoria Gazette.

WAR . . .

All of Victoria experienced, in a rather direct way in 2007, the effects of the Iraq War since it affected operation of the City of Victoria and the city budget in large ways.  Victoria City Administrator Steve Sarvi was welcomed home in 2007 after serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere for the past two years.  Some Victoria residents, such as Caleb Fisher and his family, felt the pain of war and joy of reunions more than others.  Caleb returned home from serving in Iraq in 2007.

A different kind of war, one that wrought the ravages of Mother Nature, was felt in several Victoria neighborhoods in August, 2007, especially those families in the Parkside area of Victoria, perhaps none more so than Paula and Roger Jackels and their children Nathan, Mariah, and Lydia.  Because of extensive damage to the Jackels home, the family was forced to relocate for several months to an apartment out of town while their home was being reconstructed.
