Looking back at 2007 in Victoria yields a year that can be summarized with five active headlines:  1) the celebrating of anniversaries, 2) the opening of new businesses, 3) the coming together of community, 4) the experiencing of war that touches home, and 5) the indwelling of a peace that is a product of a Christian heritage and culture.

ANNIVERSARIES

The biggest Victoria anniversaries of 2007 belonged to the St. Victoria Catholic Church (celebrating 150 years), KleinBank (celebrating 100 years), and Bud and Irene Vogel (celebrating 65 years of marriage).

Other milestones noted in 2007 included the 50th wedding anniversary of Jerry and Jane Michel of Victoria and the 60th wedding anni-versary of my parents Joe and Betty Claeys.  There were other anniversaries and the Gazette welcomes your emails and letters.

150 YEARS

St. Victoria arrived on the Victoria scene in 1857 and celebrated its 150th anniversary throughout 2007.  Fr. Bob White served as the Master of Ceremonies for most of the events, one of which included former pastor at St. Victoria, Fr. Bernardine Hahn, OFM, of St. Louis.

100 YEARS

KleinBank arrived on the Victoria scene in 1907 and celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2007 with gifts and prizes and food for those who stopped by.  President Al Liestman (left) was on hand for the festivities.

65 YEARS

Bud and Irene Vogel were married in 1942, during World War II, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary family style, with children and grandchildren.

NEW BUSINESS

Several new businesses were welcomed to Victoria in 2007.  Most notable are those housed in the renovated Notermann Building, including Mackenthun’s Gourmet Market and Parker Tannin’s Wine, Beer, and Spirits.  Another new business that opened at this site in 2007 in Joel’s Barber Shop.

Just across the street, Snap Fitness arrived on the main level of the Kid Talk Building.  On the other side of the Highway is Victoria Auto Werks, formerly C.W. Auto Repair.  And Victoria Veterinary Care is a brand new busin-ess that arrived in 2007 over by the Victoria Dairy Queen.  We’re glad you’re all here.
