Stated Mayor Mary Thun, "Victoria is very unique in Carver County.  Other city councilmembers don't get too involved in the committees and commissions, and I like to let people know that councilmembers in Victoria agree to do this voluntarily."

MAYOR:  INVITE PEOPLE TO VICTORIA

ACCESS WILL REMAIN TO ALL BUSINESSES

Mayor Mary Thun commented January 9th on the forthcoming Hwy 5 construction project through Victoria.

"People will see preliminary kinds of things in May," she said.  "Bids on the project will be let January 27th ... Highway 5 will be closed four to six weeks through Victoria, for all practical purposes.  There will be all kinds of signs and roads to take."

Mayor Thun said it will be an incentive contract, with rewards for completing the project early and penalties for delays.  The contractor will be paid $10,000 per day for fewer days than projected or a penalty of $10,000 for each day over the projected completion date.

She said it will appear that no work is getting done at the sink hole but the surcharge will be working to settle the soil.

"The city has been working on this for a year," she said.  "We've allocated funds for marketing.  People will be available to talk [inform] on a weekly basis.

"It will be very difficult.  Please continue to invite people to Victoria.  Every business and home will have access.  Just call city offices so we can explain and help us help you.  Unless you bring it to us, we can't respond.  We all want our businesses and our lives to be successful.  I've been encouraged by other city majors who want to be helpful."

The mayor added, "That underpass [near Minnewashta Parkway and the Arboretum] will be vital to us.  The warrants do not indicate that a stop and go light is necessary at the Minnewashta, but there will be a lot of safety improvements at that intersection.

"There will be work on Highway 41 but not at the same time as the Highway 5 project.  I'm willing to come and talk to any and all home associations about this.  I encourage businesses to do everything to advertise their business."
