VICTORIA ADOPTS COUNTY CURFEW

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE?

The young man responsible for the City of Victoria's new curfew hours, Kyle Simon, was in attendance at the January 9th city council meeting, at which time the old ordinance was rescinded and the city will now operate under the county's curfew.  As City Administrator Don Uram stated, "It makes sense for us to be consistent with the county."

Kyle explained that, as a member of Troop 337, he had asked Mayor Mary Thun why Victoria's curfew ordinance was different than the curfew ordinance of Chaska and Chanhassen.  He said that Victoria's ordinance had not posed a problem for him personally, but some kids work on weekends, and evening hours are the only times to "hang out."

As Administrator Uram said, "We need to do something so our kids can stay out till midnight [on weekends].  My recommendation is, quite frankly, to repeal our ordinance."

Agreed Councilmember Jim Crowley, "I am one to pursue less government than more."

Said Councilmember Tom O'Connor, "And it brings us into alignment with other communities."

Councilmember Kim Roden concurred, "I don't see a need to keep it on the books."

Councilmember Tom Strigel pointed out, "In most cases, Victoria's ordinance was less restrictive, not more, and that's where the problem came in."

The motion to not approve a second reading of an updated city ordinance (a first reading was held in December), but to completely rescind the city's ordinance passed unanimously.  According to the Carver County ordinance, the following curfew prevails in Victoria:

Younger than age 12: Home by 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; home by 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Ages 12 to 14:  Home by 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; home by 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Ages 15 to 17: Home by 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; home by midnight Friday and Saturday.

(The previous city ordinance stipulated people younger than age 17 be home by 11 p.m. on every night of the week.)

NEW CARVER COUNTY LIBRARY DIRECTOR

SERVING VICTORIA’S GROWING POPULATION

Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik visited the January 23rd city council meeting in Victoria and introduced Steve Taylor, a project manager for Carver County, who introduced Nick Demassis, the new county Library Director.  "I'm thrilled to be here," said Mr. Demassis.  "The Express Library is an innovative way of delivering library service."

He said Victoria's Express Library had a circulation of 2,500 in 2010 and a circulation of 4,500 in 2011.  "There is definitely a demand for library services," he added.  "It's an exciting challenge to deliver to this growing population."

Mr. Taylor reported that 275 people used the Victoria Express Library in 2011 and an average of 18 express lockers were used on a daily basis.
