FIBER OPTICS THROUGH VICTORIA

SHARING DATA IS A CHALLENGE

City Administrator Don Uram updated city councilmembers of the Carver County fiber project that has been underway in the county and the city.

"Late last year, in early November, they started putting in the conduit for  fiber throughout the City of Victoria," he said.  "They are done.  According to Steve Taylor [with the county], they're stuck at a couple of railroad crossings right now and trying to get the conduit through, so pretty much the project is complete from a conduit standpoint.

"They have access to this [city office] building.  We have yet to access the Fire Department to provide the fiber into that building.  The project is moving along very well considering the great weather we've had the last year or so.

"The next step in the process is the question of whether or not we're going to expand fiber to some other city facilities.  We have gotten an estimate to extend fiber to the Victoria Recreation Center.  That came in at about $12,000 which includes about $5,000 of interior cabling and getting into the building.

"The [Broadband Fiber] Project Manager, Randy Lehs, is now consolidating all cities' input on what laterals they'd like to see happen.  It looks positive.  Getting fiber to the Rec Center would give us the ability to consolidate all of our IT operations in one location.  According to the county, the  fiber itself is not going to be ready for use until the spring of 2013."

Asked Councilmember Jim Crowley, "What benefits will we see that are not already here?"

Replied Mr. Uram, "It's really about sharing data.  As you know, we have different systems in different locations and it's a challenge for us to talk to each other."

Asked Mayor Mary Thun, "When will they bring on the opportunity for the private companies to do some contracts with the county?  And when will they allow private individuals to have access?"

Replied Mr. Uram, "I'm really not in a position to answer those questions.  I'd say probably not until 2013."

As Carver County Commissioner Randy Maluchnik has reported in a past issue of the Victoria Gazette, "The Carver County Open Fiber Initiative project consists of an 89-mile fiber optic ring that runs through every city in the county along with 33 miles of laterals which connect 86 entities at 56 sites including city, county, and township governments, schools, fire departments, public safety towers, law enforcement agencies, community support organizations, and healthcare providers."

According to online information, "Fiber optic communication is a method of transmitting information from place to another by sending pules of light through an optical fiber.  The light forms an electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to carry information.   Because of its advantages over electrical transmission, optical fibers have largely replaced copper wire communications in core networks in the developed world."
