GAZETTE

February 2012

To the Editor:

Just finished reading the Gazette.  As always, it is so interesting and newsy.  It's amazing that you can get it all done over the holidays while having kids and grandkids, cooking, shopping, church, and everything else going on.  You must be exhausted.

Did you year about the 16-year old boy from Benilde High School who while playing hockey was hurt and paralyzed?  He is a real good friend of Bailey's.  She is devastated as is everyone else.  Did you hear that Bloomingdale's at Mall of America is closing?  Sad.  One of my favorite stores.

To the Editor:

The Center for Leadership and Service at the Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, provides diverse ways for students to promote for the common good on campus and beyond.  Our granddaughter Jamie Thierolf, Class of 2012, is one who got involved early and continues to prove her dedication.  She worked for more than 300 hours with AmeriCorps -- in the Salvation Army after-school program, with the Learning Connection, coordinating Relay for Life, and working with the YMCA.  Jamie has won several campus awards for her volunteer and leadership work.  She will be graduating from Moravian College in May.  Her parents are The Reverend and Mrs. Pam (Holtmeier) Thierolf, who live in Lititz, Pennsylvania.

To the Editor:

We would like to invite you to participate in the 2012 Discover Victoria Day event to be held Saturday, May 12th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Victoria Recreation Center.  This is also the fishing opener, so our theme will be "Fishin' for Something New?" and it would be great if you could have an exhibit that would build on that theme.

We also chose this date to inform residents of the Highway 5 project which will be starting in mid April, but the closures will start after Memorial Day.  We'll have customized detour maps available for residents.  Please let me know if you would be interested in reserving a booth.

         Best wishes.

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Hi, Holly.  As with the 2011 Discover Victoria Day, I will be participating by visiting with my camera and wish not to be confined to a booth, but thank you for the invitation.  The Gazette is mailed to every resident of Victoria plus a couple thousand subscriber households outside of Victoria and that is my rather comprehensive way of helping the largest number of people discover Victoria.

To the Editor:

We would like to thank all who helped make Catherine Aretz's Memorial Mass so special.  To Father Bob for putting into words Mom's spirit, love of God, and family.  To Betsy for always being a friend.  To Jamie and Sue for adding their gifts of music, as if putting a bow on Mom to send her off.  To Julie and all of the lunch ladies, you did Mom proud.  To all friends, family, and  relatives who are too numerous to mention, we take great comfort in your love and prayers.

To the Editor:

There is good news in baby-making these days.  Australia is giving parents $5,000 for the birth of each child.  Socialist Spain is giving $4,000 for each child born in a family and $5,000 for every child beyond the third one.  Germany is giving $33,000 in cash and tax breaks for each child born into a family.  Industries in Japan are rewarding parents $10,000 for children beyond the first two.

These figures are from the Population Research Institute.  It is finally dawning on some nations that children are the driving, irreplaceable factor in economic survival and prosperity.  Sadly, babies in these countries are being saved for economic rather than moral reasons.  But they are being saved!  Alleluya!
