The Victoria Gazette

July 20th.  The temperature that Wednesday evening was 94 degrees and climbing, but hundreds of people had Elvis on their calendar and they showed up to see him in downtown Victoria.  As if to acknowledge and greet the large crowd, a welcoming breeze blew into town and cooling clouds rolled in with Elvis and his white convertible.  The hundreds of classic cars adorning city streets that evening were more colorful than they've ever been, and the proof is posted in Sue's Album at VictoriaGazette.com -- along with Chris Olson, of course, who sings and moves like his Graceland counterpart.  It was midsummer magic on Stieger Lake in downtown Victoria.

July 15th to 17th.  The Victoria Lions Weekend wouldn't be the same without Darlene Wedin, a native of Rockford and owner of the carnival wagon from which she serves hot sugared donuts, salty fresh popcorn, and delicious fried cheese curds.  A darling of the Victoria Lions, she added the cheese curds to her fare in 2005 and they remain a favorite item.  Darlene is the only vendor that is allowed at the annual Lions Softball and Baseball Tournament Weekend and she's been coming since 1981, the first year she went into the vendor business.  Although she doesn't haul her carnival wagon to as many locations as she has in the past, Darlene retains the Victoria Lions among her favorite people.  At the age of 74, she no doubt will be coming to Victoria for many years to come.

July 27th.  For much of the afternoon it rained and rained, sheets of rain like we saw on Saturday, July 23rd, and we suspected the concert that Wednesday evening, July 27th, in Victoria would be cancelled but, like the midsummer magic we have been experiencing all season, and even over these many years, the sun came out, the clouds moved over, and the show went on.  Thank you, Steve Devich and your Cedar Avenue Big Band from Minnetonka, for making music on the shores of Stieger Lake in downtown Victoria and for helping to brighten the day for us with your big band sounds.  The band has a history of more than 25 years of musical showmanship and talent and has played in Las Vegas, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and other large venues.

July 13th.  The Minnesota Valley Community Band, under the longtime direction of Barry Fox of Chaska, probably draws the largest crowd for a Concert that does not also include Classic Cars in downtown Victoria.  During a brief intermission on the pleasant, breezy Wednesday evening, July 13th, Mr. Fox commented on the beautiful natural setting of Victoria's new bandstand and the size and enthusiasm of the audience.  "Tonight we are the Victoria Community Band," he said.  Every piece the band plays was enjoyed, including one sung by Mrs. Jane Fox, but none more so than the patriotic "God Bless America."  A standing ovation brought out their encore, "America the Beautiful."

July 6th.  Classic Car Nights began this year in June and will continue into September, thanks to Randy Miller, Jerry Hartman, Steve Schmieg, and Dave Beneke plus other volunteers and the Victoria Business Association.  On these Wednesday evenings in downtown Victoria, hundreds of visitors enjoy viewing hundreds of classic cars.

At right is the 1960 Volvo Model 544 owned by Jon Dressen of Chaska.  The two-door four-passenger vehicle was made by Volvo from 1947 to 1966.  Fuel economy for these cars was above average for cars sold in the United States.

Below is the 1956 Ford Thunderbird owned by Paul and Linda Gustafson of Eden Prairie.  Pink in color, it features long black eyelashes, rhinestone eyeliner, feather boa, white sidewalls, and a spare tire, with a pink flamingo and pink sunglasses on the dash.
