The Scoop

at City Hall

Poppitz Field.  For more than 25 years, Coach Mike Poppitz has been grooming and improving the Victoria Vics baseball team and also the baseball field at Lions Park in Victoria.  In honor of Mike’s hours and years of volunteer work and dedication, the Victoria City Council officially named Field #4 at Lions Park, “Poppitz Field.”  Thank you, Mike Poppitz, for good work.  Your field is beautiful.  ~S.O.

Second and First!  This is a picture from the Rec League Softball Tournament this past weekend and includes two 8th and 9th grade Victoria teams as they took 1st and 2nd place in their division!  It was a fun year and a great tournament.  Rec League is made up of girls from Victoria and nearby communities of Carver, Chaska, and Chanhassen, and they play from May through mid July.  The League has teams from T-ball up to high school age.  There were enough girls going into 8th and 9th grades to have two teams from Victoria!  In this age group there were seven teams total.  Victoria Team #2 just lost one game and played five games in the tournament.  It is always a fun time, all done by volunteers.  Victoria Team #1 went undefeated in the tournament this year; they had three games in the tournament.

(L-r) Second Place Victoria Team:  Head Coach Kevin Rolf, Coach Todd Triethart, Morgan Frye, Kayla Peters, Janine Andrys, Hannah Wessels, Sarah McLarnan, Rebecca Triethart, Hannah Kneeland, Abby Rolf, Sydney Dvis, Megan Vandervest.  First Place Victoria Team:  Kelsey Bell, Katie Bell, Katie Verbarendse, Hallie Nippolat, Lauren Sundby, Lauren Streigle, Lily Podany, Alexis Flesness, Christine Pwinica, Sarah Almquist, Coach Brian Verbarendse, Coach Jim Bell, Head Coach Bill Pwinica.

Making Cookies.  This is a picture from our recent trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania, where we made cookies at the Hershey Museum with our daughter Pam and her husband The Reverend Rich Thierolf.  That’s Harriet and I on each end.

Krista Griffith, daughter of Tom and Nancy Griffith of Victoria, graduated summa cum laude in May from the University of St. Thomas in St Paul with a 4.0 GPA.  Krista served two years as President of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars at St. Thomas.  She also served on the National Leadership Council as one of 20 students nationwide for NSCS.  In addition to many other campus organizations, she was President of Delta Epsilon Sigma, a national honor society.  Krista has been accepted to the University of St. Thomas Law School in Minneapolis to begin classes in August.

J.W. and Tyler.  This is a picture of me, Tyler Steubs, and my grandmother Julianne Wartman of Victoria at my graduation from Georgetown University this past May 18th, 2009.  Hope you can put it in the Gazette for my parents, Julie and John Steubs, and my grandmother.  It would be greatly appreciated.  I will be starting medical school at the University of Minnesota Medical School this fall, and my parents would like this in the newspaper before that begins, if possible.
