GAZETTE

To the Editor:

Augie Geske was very special to me, and I just heard there was a very nice article in the Gazette about him.  Where can I find or buy one close to the Cologne area?  Is there a convenience store around Waconia that sells them?  Was the article in the February or the March issue?  Thanks.

         Deborah Walter

         Cologne, Minnesota

To the Editor:

There has been a lot of discussion at the Capitol this session about guns.  This morning [March 13th] I introduced the Gun Crime Enforcement Proposal SF1359.

This bill is intended to keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who are already legally prohibited from possessing firearms -- by targeting instances of gun crime and assisting law enforcement and prosecutors in enforcing current restrictions.

This bill contains no new restrictions on gun purchases or gun ownership.  It has no impact on law abiding citizens.  More specifically, this bill does not require universal background checks on gun purchases.  It has earned the support of the NRA, GOCRA, Sheriff Jim Olson, and owners of local gun-related businesses.

This has certainly been a bi-partisan effort.  In the Minnesota House of Representatives, State Representative Debra Hilstrom (DFL) is the Chief Author.  Every member of the House Republican Caucus is a coauthor on the Gun Crime Enforcement Proposal, including both Carver County Representatives Ernie Leidiger (R) and State Representative Joe Hoppe (R).  A number of DFL Senate and House members have also signed on.

Thank you for your continued support and, as always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

         Sincerely,

         Senator Julianne Ortman

To the Editor:

Here's to another year.  You do a great job that must consume much of your time.  It must be a labor of love.  Thank you.  I think your daughter was in my grandson Mike's class.  He has four girls, #4 just a week old.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  It was an interesting article on Father Bernardine last month, and reading of Father Elstan too.  I served Mass for both of them in the early 1950's.  They were an inspiration for my friend and cousin Bill Schmidt to become a Franciscan priest.

To the Editor:

I must make some corrections to the Victoria Public School Photo on page 38 of the March paper.  The young man in the middle of the front row is not Stanley Kowalke, but Gilbert Walter.  Neil Nordberg is also Niel Bealka.  The correct spelling of Robert's last name is Spoerner.  The correct spelling of Miss Goldschmidt's first name is Margory.  The correct spelling of Miss Plocher's first name is Jeanne.

Neil and I were the only classmates that started out in first grade and ended up graduating together in the Chaska High School Class of 1948.  Robert lost his life while serving in the  U.S. Army.  Margory, Helen Wolff, Louise Kaufhold, Virginia Thurk, and I were in the same confirmation class at the Moravian Church of Lake Auburn in 1943.
