A Year to Remember by Tom Stumpf, Cowboy Correspondent.  “On the news the other day it was reported that it had not been this cold in Minnesota on the first day of spring since 1965.  This info brought back a flood (pun intended) of wild and wonderful memories from days of yore.”

Rumble Strips in Victoria by Randy Maluchnik, Carver County Commissioner.  “Even though we have reconstructed a new state highway through Victoria, it is under-designed for the traffic it has, and the crash rates are above average.  In my opinion, MnDOT is trying to use rumble strips to improve safety in ways that the strips are not designed or recommended to do so.”

The 40th Annual Auto Show by Sue Orsen.  “We attended on Sunday, March 10th, and noticed that America’s love affair with the automobile is as strong as ever.  We climbed in an out of many vehicles which ranged from tiny VW’s to ‘regular’ sized cars to crossovers to minivans and SUVs.”

Reflection from Arizona by Tom Abts, Deer Run Golf Pro.  “This was not a golf vacation.  This was about eating, talking, and watching college basketball.  Very good stuff.  But on the last day I broke away and teed it up at San Marcos Golf Course.”

To the West by Sue Orsen  “When I’m invited to lunch, I go, especially when it’s at the invitation of royalty.  Thank you, King Ron Holtmeier who moved to Westview with his wife Harriet.”

To the North and to the East by Sue Orsen.  “Highway 7 will be closed during the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Hwy 7 and County Road 11 from May 2013 to the fall of 2013.  The roundabout will border Minnetrista and Victoria and align Co. Rd. 11 with Kings Point Road.”

Waiting for White Horses by Chuck Freiberg, Up North Cabin Guy.  “Mr. P found me with coffee in hand one morning and asked what I was doing.  I told him I was waiting for white horses and just then, as sunrise broke over the horizon, there they were — white swells of mist being blown across our frozen lake.”

New Radisson Blu Opens at Mall of America by Sue Orsen.  “We walked through the expansive sky bridge and were invited into the FireLake restaurant.  We each had a glass of wine and  shared an appetizer of hand-rubbed chicken wings.”

30 Years Ago the Gazette featured Jerry Schmieg in “He Gives 300%.”

20 Years Ago the Gazette featured Dave and Loretta Kocka in “The Yoke’s On Us.”

10 Years Ago the Gazette featured the Grand Opening of the new Victoria Field House in “Theater in the Round.”

Magnificent Marco Island by Sue Orsen/The Victoria Gazette.  “Pelicans propped themselves on the bow of our airboat like oversized hood ornaments.  Other pesky pelicans hung around our deep sea fishing boat like the smart scavengers they are.”  Click on Front Page.

Lions 2013 Easter Egg Hunt by Victoria Lion Kurt Zuppke.  “This year the hunt was held indoors on Saturday, March 30th, at the Victoria Recreation Center because of inclement weather.”

Communications in Victoria by Mayor Tom O’Connor  “This past year, Victoria was one of 12 winners nationally from 161 finalists to receive a new City website.  Total value of the award is $30,000.”

Days of the Stick Shift by Thom Derr, Motorcycle Man.  “My son Ken began reminiscing about leaning to drive and some of our adventures.  All of my children were required to learn the operation of a manual transmission car before moving on to an automatic transmission.”

Housing Market Tightens by Jim Paulsen, Real Real Estate Rapper.  “There are currently 69 homes for sale in Victoria, which is down from 96 and 81 for the same periods in 2010/2011, respectively.  New listings are down 28% from February 2012, and median sales prices are up 41.4% for the same period.”

Ice-Out is Around the Corner by Bill Olson, MCWD Manager.  “As we prepare for ice-out on area lakes, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has been working with Carver County and other partners on ways to protect our lakes and streams from aquatic invasive species.”

Happy Birthday, Papa by Sue Orsen  “My dad celebrated his 88th birthday on March 5th when a bunch of us kids (I’m using the word loosely) were able to get home despite blowing snow and icy conditions.”

Senator Ortman Introduced Bill to Protect Gun-Owners Rights “This bill is intended to keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who are already legally prohibited from possessing firearms by targeting instances of gun crime and assisting law enforcement and prosecutors in enforcing current restrictions.”

The Weathervane by Lucas Graunke.  “In Minnesota we don’t usually see spring until about early to mid April.  This year we may see more snow than rain, though.”

Doris Borka Radabaugh 76, died March 13th.

Should I top it off fer ya today?  by Mike Wartman.  “In the day of  full service, windshields were cleaned if dirty or not.  The oil was checked regardless of the need for oil or if you had just got gas the day before.”
