April 2011

Steelroots:  Touching Earth & Sky is an exhibition of root-shaped sculptures by artist Steve Tobin opening in April at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  Presented by The Mosaic Company, this is the first Steelroots exhibition ever in Minnesota and only its second showing worldwide.  As the Pennsylvania artist says, "The roots evoke communities, families, unseen power, networks all coming together for a shared purpose.  They gather energy and send it upward in support of the 'tree' that is not visually apparent.  The roots frame the view, creating landscapes in negative spaces that ebb and flow as the viewer moves around and under the piece."  Steven Tobin gained international acclaim in 2004 with the installation of the Trinity Root sculpture near Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, the first and only art memorial near the 9/11 disaster site.  At that time he stated, "The function for me of roots is to show the power of the unseen.  And on 9/11 we found out about the power of all our unseen connections, the things that nurture us that are hidden below the surface."

Happy 90th, Mae!  Please come and celebrate Mae Schmid's 90th birthday on Saturday, May 7th, 2011, from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. in Elstan Hall at the St .Victoria Catholic Church in Victoria.  Lunch is being provided.  No gifts, please.

Father Conran Schneider, OFM, will soon be celebrating his 60th anniversary of priestly ministry.  This Chaska resident was born in Victoria, joined the Franciscans serving parishes on both sides of the Minnesota river, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 24th, 1951.  We will be celebrating with a Mass at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Chaska at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25th, with a reception to follow, perhaps in Father Conran's beloved Friary Gardens of the Old Friary.

Fr. Conran is the lone remaining friar living locally who once resided in the Old Friary, built in 1868, vacant, and undergoing long-term repairs and rehabilitation.  He currently lives in an assisted living residence in downtown Chaska, serving as chaplain at the nearby Auburn  Manor nursing home.  Fr. Conran is a hero of mine, for whenever I visit a Chaskan in the nursing home, a homebound parishioner, or a hospice patient, I invariably follow in his footsteps.  Although in his 80's, Fr. Conran is always giving of his time to others, often ministering to elderly people younger than he is.
