The Scoop

at City Hall

Although both Rick and Lois attended the Waconia High School and knew of each other, they didn’t become an item until later.  In fact, said Lois, “we became acquainted shortly before we bought the bar.  I could say we were strictly business partners, but that wouldn’t be true.”

They were married -- you might say buckled -- on September 7th, 2002.  Although the date easily rolls off her tongue, Lois laughed, “We’ve both missed our anniversary every year by anywhere from one day to three weeks.  Must happen because we work together every day.”

Rick said he takes time off to fish up north once in a while.  Said Lois, “That’s the only time we’re apart.”  During her husband’s fishing trips, she might pick up a book or tend a bit to flower gardening.  They also spend time with one daughter, two sons (all who work at Floyd’s), and grandson Tyler.

“If you ask why we’ve been successful, I would say the most important reason is our good employees,” said Lois.  “We also have a good location and we appeal to a broad range of ages and professions.  Now we’ll have a kitchen and menu.  We’re just expanding things.”

But why an expansion in 2009?  Isn’t everyone talking about the poor economy?  “It’s true,” Lois replied.  “With the .08 law, people are staying closer to home more and not going out so much.  That works well for us because people can come to Floyd’s, have a great dinner, have a few cocktails, and listen to live music at a far lesser cost than going downtown.  And people are comfortable at Floyd’s.”

When Lois says “downtown,” you probably know she means “The Cities.”

Together Rick and Lois are the generals on the construction job.  Rick’s tape measure and Lois’ good eye work well together.  The exterior of the two-story addition will include varied textures of stone, iron, and stucco and coordinate well with the existing exterior.  Again, the anticipated completion date is May 2009.  “We hope to have a full menu right away,” said Lois.

“And we’re opening the patio in May too,” added Rick, “weather permitting.”  Upgrades are also planned for the patio bar and they hope to pave their parking lot this summer.

Said Rick, “We’ve got the best customers in the world.  That’s what makes the place successful.”

Neither one mentioned it immediately, but another reason for the success of Floyd’s is the constant promotions.  It seems Lois wakes up every morning with another idea.  “I’ve always been in sales.  I’ve always been a promoter,” she admits.  “That’s what I did for the hotel.”

Floyd’s fills their calendar with Bango, which is a bar bingo where you win cash prizes.  Another promotion is Chicks with Pipes, or ladies arm wrestling night.  Lois mentioned their Crawdad and Crableg Boils, Spaghetti Feeds, Authentic Mexican Taco Nights, and special events like Mardi Gras party, Beer Is A Good Day, Country Weekend, and more.  Rick mentioned the dart teams and softball teams sponsored by Floyd’s.

Not long ago the Gazette reported that Rick and Lois Plocher held a Blues Festival at Floyd’s and donated admissions and food proceeds from the event to the Victoria Athletic Association.  The check amounted to $4,343.  It’s not a surprise that there’s a lot of good feeling in the community for Floyd’s.

Thank you, Rick and Lois, for spreading goodwill.  We’re glad you’re buckled at the bar here in Victoria, and we’re anticipating spring on your backyard patio.
