THIS AMOUNTS TO A “WOW!”

EXCELLENT FINANCIAL REPORTING IN VICTORIA

Jylan Johnson, the city’s Finance Director, accepted the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting awarded to the City of Victoria for its comprehensive annual financial report for the year ended 2007.

Said Jim Knutson, Minnesota’s State Representative in the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), “I’m very honored to present this award this evening.    It’s the highest form of recognition a city can receive in the area of accounting and financial reporting.  There is very demanding criteria.  It’s the first time Victoria has earned this honor.  Numerous hours are required for this certificate.  Only 93 other cities in Minnesota have received this certificate.”

Jylan Johnson is primarily responsible for preparing the award winning Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.  Said Councilmember Tom O’Connor, “This amounts to a WOW!  The average citizen cannot comprehend how complicated this lady’s work is.  Wow!”

“Thank you for your fine work,” said Mayor Mary Thun.  “Great job and thank you,” said Councilmember Jim Paulsen.  Other councilmembers also acknowledged the good work of the finance director.

VICTORIA ADMINISTRATOR IS FIRM

OPTION 2 IS BEST FOR BAYCLIFFE BOX

Grant Peterson, a resident at Baycliffe, spoke to city councilmembers on March 9th in regard to the large utility box that appeared overnight at the Solie residence.  He referred also to the February 23rd city council meeting at which Council chose “Option 2” to address the situation.

“I didn’t know it was on the agenda February 23rd,” said Mr. Peterson.  “I was involved in getting the overhead cables buried.  I’ve talked to several people yet I don’t think I still know all the issues.  I think we need a very specific plan.  I’m not nearly as impacted by the utility box as Solie’s, but I do live across the street so I look at it too.  I think the proper decision would be Option 3.  I’m not sure why we’re not taking Solie’s up on their offer to help pay for it.  I would encourage a reconsideration about the placement with Xcel.”

When City Administration Don Uram was asked about his opinion on the matter, he stated, “Option 2 would be our continuing recommendation and recommendation for the future.  It wouldn’t change.”

“Is there any reason for you to rethink that?” asked Councilmember Tom O’Connor.

         “No, sir,” replied Mr. Uram.

Councilmember Jim Paulsen said, “I will think about it independently.”  Councilmember Tim Amundsen said the issue could probably be vetted.  Councilmember Kim Roden said, “I think we should revisit the issue.  We’re here to serve our citizens, not to serve TKDA or the staff.  I understand I’m only one vote.”

Added the city administrator, “I will be happy to bring this up at the next meeting if that is your wish, but barring any new information, our recommendation will not change.”

Option 2 included moving the box to Solie’s west lot line.  Option 3 included removing the box to a location 600 feet away to an existing power pole at the intersection of Thornberry curve and Baycliffe Road.  The choice remains Option 2.  According to Administrator Uram, Xcel will move the box this spring.
