To the Editor: Marv and I just got back from the World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament held this year in Bismarck, ND, and I am now an official world champion! We are going to Ed Vogel's auction today, and I am bringing along my trophy to show Rose and Dale Carroll for sure, as Dale is the one who showed me how to pitch shoes back in the 1980's when we lived in Victoria. I am the state news media director, and our goal is get the word out about horseshoe pitching and try to get people back into the sport. Minnesota has one of the largest memberships in the U.S. The world tourney had over 1,200 entrants including people from Japan and Norway. Marv also pitched, but did not have a good tourney but he said he made a lot of friends in his pitching class. Marlys Timm Loretto, Minnesota MarTimm@webtv.net
To the Editor: Sue, the whole poem, from which my learned brother had a piece in the Gazette last month, goes like this: It was in the gray October and I was far from sober, when into the vile gutter I did slide. As I lay there feeling sickly, praying, Lord, please help me quickly, a pig came up and lay down by my side. There we lay together in the vile October weather when a passing nun was heard to say, "You can tell a man that boozes by the company he chooses," and the pig got up and slowly walked away." Here is some of the best advice my dad ever gave me: Never pick up a cat when it's digging a hole. Never take a nap under the chicken roost. Never swallow your Copenhagen. Never eat beans before church. Never date a girl whose father is a pro-wrestle. Jesse Coghill, Jordan, Minnesota
To the Editor: I had to look, and look and look and look and look and look, but I finally found the hook -- on page 12 in the Timberwall ad under "September." Wayne Chapman, Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: A note of thanks for all your reporting and hard work. Good to hear the road reports. It's been a long summer for many people with the construction of County Road #11. We sure hope the storm sewer does its work and no more water up to our front steps. I think the fishhook is on page 12 in the Seminar Information section of the Timberwall ad. Enjoyed reading about your trip with Joan Jendro right along with you to see Father Elstan in June. The power of word! God bless. Loretta Kocka, Victoria, Minnesota
To the Editor: I found your fishhook on page 12 in the Timberwall ad. Do I win some-thing? We have your newspaper in our archives for posterity on microfilm. So does the State Historical Society. You know what this means? That your old papers really can be preserved for posteriors, should we ever need to go back to outhouses again. I appreciate your sense of humor. Thanks. Fred Livesay, Curator, Carver County Historical Society historical@co.carver.mn.us
