Victoria Moments

Thank you, Margie Robling.  It was 37 years ago that a young lady started cooking for the Victoria Lions Club.   Up until that time, our Lions prepared their own meals starting with Whitey Wellens’ rolled beef roast and baked potatoes followed by Lion Howard Backus, a retired U.S. Navy food procurement agent who had access to some fantastic Navy recipes.  He was assisted by Lion Wally Kroening who called himself The Bull Cook.  Howard, however, moved to California in 1973, leaving us hungry once again.

The Victoria Lions Club had grown in membership and we were no longer able to prepare our own meals.  It was then that we were fortunate enough to engage the services of Margie Robling, a Victoria resident who found a way to keep us well fed with a variety of great meals at minimal cost.  A frugal Margie never ran out of food, even when a number of unexpected guests would appear.  Her dependability was a constant.  Even though she had to deal with a new and different Lions President each year, we knew that on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, dinner would be served at 6:30 p.m.

The members of the Victoria Lions Club thank you, Margie, for your diligent 37 years of service and we wish you a happy and healthy retirement from our kitchen.

Engaged. Roger and Marge Leuthner of Victoria announce the engagement of their daughter Tami Jean Leuthner to Ron John Schmieg, son of Richard and Mary Schmieg of Chaska.  Tami is a graduate of Chaska High School.  She is employed as a cook at the Golden Living Center in Excelsior.  Ron is a graduate of Chaska High School.  He is employed in the warehouse at Medallion Cabinetry in Waconia.  An October 16th wedding is planned.

Victoria Lions Win 3CV Title. The Victoria Lions softball team won the 3CV grade 6/7 championship.  The girls had an excellent season with an overall record of 8-2.   Most of the team members are residents of Victoria.

Dolan Craine. Team Foxjet swimmers earned 13 state titles and won the 3rd place AAA team trophy at this year’s Long Course State Swim Meet held July 29th to August 1st, 2010, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.  Team Foxjet also hosted the meet, which included more than 1,400 athletes and was the largest state meet in the history of Minnesota swimming.

I am attaching a group photo that contains members of the team that qualified to compete in the 2010 Long Course State Swim Meet for Ages 12 and Under.  The attached individual photo is of Dolan Craine of Victoria.  Out of all the swimmer boys ages 9-10 in the State of Minnesota, Dolan came in 6th place in the 200-meter freestyle relay, 15th in the 50-meter backstroke, 17th in the 50-meter freestyle, and 24th in the 100-meter freestyle.

Members of Team Foxjet come from all over the southwest metro.

Haley’s Happening. The number TEN seems to give people that warm fuzzy feeling.   “I won TEN thousand dollars.”  “I got TEN things done today.”  “What are the top TEN music hits this week?”

The number 10 may not mean a lot to most people, but for Haley Notermann of Victoria, her upcoming birthday will be a unique and special day.  Haley will turn “10” on 10-10-10.  I am sure this type of thing doesn’t happen often.  In fact, that particular date won’t happen again for another 1,000 years.  So enjoy your day, Haley.

Haley is the daughter of Dan and Rhonda Notermann of Victoria and the grandddaughter of Doris Bongard of Victoria.  She is also the 10th grandchild of Eleanor Notermann of Waconia.  Big birthday wishes to you, Haley, from your Aunt Jean.
