VICTORIA COUNCIL CONSIDERS 3RD FIRE ENGINE

TO REPLACE 1978 STEP VAN THAT LEAKS GAS

Victoria Fire Chief Tim Walsh guided city councilmembers, staff, and audience on a short tour of the Victoria Fire Station at the Monday, August 9th, city council meeting -- a meeting that was held in the Community Room at the Fire Station since the Hall normally used as the Council Chambers was being prepared for the Tuesday, August 10th, primary election

Chief Walsh pointed out the various pieces of Fire Department equipment, their age, and their purpose.  One of the pieces, a 1976 Step Van, has issues including a gas tank that leaks and can only be filled half way.  The Step Van carries personnel and firefighter equipment to a scene.

Newest piece of equipment is a 2009 Grass Rig that was put into service in May 2010.  It replaced the 1978 Chevrolet one-ton truck that also carried medical equipment and grass firefighting equipment.  The new truck had arrived at the Victoria Fire Station that very evening.

Back at the Community Room, City Administrator Don Uram pointed out that $375,000 for a new fire engine is included in the City of Victoria’s Capital Improvement Plan for the year 2011, and that its purchase would mean getting rid of the Step Van.

“There are so many ways out there to help in financing,” said Chief Walsh, “and there’s so much work that goes into preparing a plan for the engine.  As for cost, it might be $280,000 or it might be $420,000.”  Chief Walsh continued, “Our first line Engine today is a 1991 delivered in September of 1992.  The cost for that Engine and the equipment was $226,000.”

“Don’t we have enough engines?” asked Mayor Mary Thun.

“We’ve got two,” replied Chief Walsh.  “We’d have three with this one.  In six years we’ll look at that again, to see what’s out there, see what we need.  Maybe we’ll have new buildings in town.”

Councilmember Jim Paulsen wanted to know who provides the expertise in getting the specifications and numbers for a new fire engine.  “Who’s the bird dog?” he asked.

In fact, the work is done by members of the Fire Department in conjunction with city staff, especially City Clerk Jennifer Kretsch and and City Administrator Don Uram.

Said Councilmember Tim Amundsen, “The majority of calls are medical.  I’ve never seen water sprayed at a medical.  Is there another piece of equipment to meet a medical need?  Seems we’d need something for you in that area.”

“We use equipment for both fires and medicals,” said Chief Walsh.  “To me that’s a no-brainer thing to do.”

Said Councilmember Amundsen, “If it’s got red paint and chrome, it costs more.”

Summarized Mayor Thun, “So it sounds like we’re not closed to the idea [getting rid of the Step Van and purchasing a new Fire Engine], but we’re looking at options.”

Discussion of the city’s 5-year Capital Improvement Plan is expected to resume at the Monday, September 15th, city council meeting.
