To the Editor:

Looking for reasons to get out of the house?  We've got Fat Tuesday Wine and Beer Tasting on March 8th and our Spring Fling on April 9th.  The Spring Fling will be my last fundraiser experience here at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Chaska before my re-assignment.  I will be leaving Guardian Angels in late spring, early summer.  Let me explain.

There is a small window of opportunity for each and every one of us to take care of our aging parents.  My window of opportunity has become all the more urgent with the degeneration of my mom's health.  She has a rapidly advancing case of Alzheimers, diagnosed within the past five months, and my 80-year old father is her sole caregiver.

I've been meeting with my family, and my siblings have asked me to fill a greater role in caregiving.  I presented my situation to the Archbishop and, short of requesting a leave of absence from pastoral work.   I've asked for an assignment, within or not within a parish, as a pastor or an assistant, that would be conducive to more significant assistance to my parents.

As you can imagine, this was incredibly hard for me to do.  Guardian Angels and the surrounding community mean much to me.  You have welcomed me into your community, your homes, your families, and shown me tremendous love and support.  You are a blessing to me.

I have also learned much from you and will benefit from what you have taught me.  I thrive on your efforts for the mission of Jesus Christ.

I understand there are now many very qualified priests available to serve Guardian Angels.  One of the benefits of the recent Planning Task Force decisions is that we'll have this year a larger than usual pool of priests available for reassignment.

I've been long impressed and inspired by how GA parishioners step up and assume ownership in their fast-growing parish.  The many efforts underway today will continue with a transition to the next pastor.  I will do everything to make a smooth transition possible.  I am grateful for your thoughts and expressions of concern for my mom.

To the Editor:

The picture in the February Gazette that you identified as Nushie and Mae Schmid at Schmid Bros Bar is actually Clara Jensen and Howard (Howie) Walter at Hardy Jensen’s Bar.  Hardy and Clara owned the bar in the late ‘40’s and early ‘50’s until Leo Schneider purchased it in 1957.

Prior to Jensens, Ed Walter (Howie’s dad) owned the bar.  Howard married Betty Tschimperle, daughter of Florian and Marie Tschimperle and sister to Luverne Weber.  Betty passed away in 2002.  Howie operated the Victoria Cafe for a time and then a restaurant in Faribault until his retirement.  Hardy Jensen returned to Germany because of his retirement benefits after Clara’s passing in Victoria.

Doc Kraft owned the bar in the ‘30’s and early ‘40’s before Ed Walter.  Bill Aretz tended bar for him after he left the farm and moved to an apartment above Notermann’s store.  William Aretz was Chub and Billy’s dad.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Thank you, Jerry, for the correction and the historical information.  I heard from many readers!   I hardly ever take the route of assuming things, but does anyone else see the resemblance that I saw ... and continue to see?  Sorry, folks.  Mea culpa.

To the Editor:

I found a page of your May 2005 Victoria Gazette online.  I really wanted to see the picture of the students in front of the school as many of my Diethelm, Poppler, and Notermann relatives are identified, but the picture does not show up on the screen.  Is there some way to view this picture?  Is it available anywhere?

I live in Washington State but was born and raised in Oregon.  I'm researching the Fessler ancestry.  Charles Diethelm (born 1823) married Franciska Elisabeth Fässler (born 1821) and they both lived in Victoria, Minnesota.  They had 11 children so there are a lot of Diethelms running around.  Some of them are in that picture along with some other relatives.

Thanks for your help on this.

         Bob Fessler,

         Bremmerton, Washington
