I guess I just lucked out. Every year I spend about an hour or so walking among the fishermen at the Victoria Fishing Contest, saying hello to familiar faces, checking out a few unfamiliar faces, and in general hanging out and eating a burger. I don't run from one hole in the ice to the other (there are 1,200 of them, after all!) trying to get a photo of the perfect catch, the biggest catch, the smallest catch.

And I don't spend all my time at the Weigh Station where contender-fish are brought to be weighed in, because then I'd never see all the other goings on. So, as I said, I just lucked out coming across Dalles Notermann and his big northern -- in the nick of time, just before the fish was dropped back into the ice hole. It's a catch and release lake, you know.

I continue to say that I don't understand catch and release in the fishing world. I've been told that most of the fish caught and released, die because they don't survive the bloody trauma of a fishhook caught in their gills and then pried or yanked out.

I also don't understand how so many of you find the fishhook that I hide so well in the Gazette every month! As you can see, it was wrapped around the heart in the Jerry Chapman ad on page 22 of the February issue. After I swirled around in the minnow bucket, I came up with Bev Tschimperle who wins the $10 drawing. It's sort of a catch and release operation. Congratulations, Ms. Tschimperle. The big bucks will be on its way to you soon.
