Summer Day Camps. As February temperatures plummeted and the blustery winds of March roar, Minnesota parents warm their hearts with dreams of summer camp at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.  Summer day camps provide a mix of hands-on planting, science, cooking, and art explorations for youngsters and include delicious organic snacks and lunches.  It’s not as far away as you think -- only 3 months and 3 miles (from Victoria).

Hello to all of our members of APPLE and residents living within the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD), which includes the entire City of Victoria.

The  Pierson Lake Association known as APPLE (Area Partnership for Pierson Lake Enhancement), along with the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, Minnesota Waters, and the Bush Foundation, hosted a free event on Tuesday, February 23rd, that was open to all Lake and River Associations to explain the ins and outs of water monitoring.

Presentors Dr. Udai Singh Ph.D., PE, and Kelly Slattery, MS, with the MCWD, and facilitators Eli Condon and her intern helper Jaime Nielson representing Minnesota Waters, explained to a group of people representing eight different lake associations within the MCWD how and why they monitor lakes and streams.  They gave us an overview of the methods and tools used to monitor water quality, reasoning for and use of Lake Grades, and how we can help by observing water quality indicators.

Pierson Lake’s water quality Chairman Dick Kellor, also present at the meeting, has created a vision and action plan for our lake.  We are fortunate to have Mike Klingelhutz, a Carver County representative for the MCWD, as a member in APPLE along with a group of dedicated lakeshore homeowners.

Spring is fast approaching and with it our open water season and all the fun we have on our area’s beautiful lakes.  Take time out to think about what you can do to preserve our water quality.  Pictured above (l-r):  Eli Condon, Dr. Udai Singh, Jaime Nielson, Kelly Slattery.

Trunk Show.  The “trunk” show at the MN Landscape Arboretum encompasses 20 exquisite large and small wood turnings created by Edina artisan Virgil Leih.  They are works of natural beauty, breathtaking in scale, shape, texture, and grain.  Leih rescues and re-creates whole tree trunks that are otherwise destined for landfill woodchippers.  In some instances, he may carve away up to 95% of a 200-pound tree trunk to reveal a unique inner pattern of golden grain and rings.  Leih is a retired minister and former executive recruiter.

Snow in the South.  Our granddaughter Elissa Holtmeier (not pictured) lives in Mobile, Alabama, where it rarely snows.  She writes on February 12th that the snow isn’t sticking in downtown Mobile because the ground is too wet.
