Lizzi Traxler of Victoria was selected by Holy Family Catholic High School of Victoria as the school’s 2008 Athena Award Winner. Public and private schools in the greater Minneapolis area select recipients to recognize young female athletes and because of excellence in individual or team sports. The Minneapolis Athena Awards Committee honored 52 senior women this year on May 9th at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Lizzi received nine varsity letters at Holy Family, including soccer, basketball, and football, served as captain in soccer and basketball, was twice elected most valuable player in soccer, received six varsity letters in soccer and basketball, and a state award in soccer. Wrote Lizzi on her questionnaire, “I love all sports I play, but one of the sports I never thought I would be able to play in high school was football. I ended up getting my chance to play in high school when the football coach came to my soccer practice and asked me to be the extra point kicker for the varsity team. I held the starting extra point kicker position for the varsity football team during my senior year.” Lizzi’s cumulative GPA at Holy Family is 3.9. Her school and community involvements outside of sports and academics include Eucharist Minister, mission trip to Costa Rica, Making Tracks for Celiacs, Yearbook Committee, hosting a foreign exchange student, high school ambassador, Feed My Starving Children, Families Moving Forward, National Catholic Leadership Conference/Called to Lead. She plans to attend the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, play basketball for the varsity team, and major in mechanical engineering. Glen Z. Via Capistrano? During the first weekend of May, 2008, I saw this rather large flock of barn swallows taking a brief respite from their arduous migration north. They looked exhausted from the cold wind and rain. Sadly, a lack of food and only more cold on my lightly sheltered deck was the best I could do for them, fortunately for the orioles. I was able to get grape jelly out to them almost the moment they arrived! Kurt Zuppke Victoria Lion, MN
