CITY OF VICTORIA GETS BEST POSSIBLE AUDIT REPORT

MAYOR QUESTIONS SIGNATURES ON CITY CHECKS

         Mayor Funk made a motion to remove Kelly Grinnell’s ability to sign city checks in order to increase separate of duties.  Victoria Finance Director Kelly Grinnell is responsible for preparing the City of Victoria’s award winning Certificates of Achievement in Financial Reporting.

         According to Interim City Manager Doug Reeder, three people are authorized to sign city checks for payment — himself, Finance Director Kelly Grinnell, and Mayor Funk.

         Commenting on an article in a local paper, Councilmember Jim Crowley stated, “It’s irresponsible from two perspectives:  #1) that it was written and not passed by staff for review and consideration to ensure that it was factual, and #2) that it was printed without any consideration as to whether or not it was factual.  Both are unacceptable.”

 

RESIDENTS CONCERNED ABOUT LEADERSHIP

PUBLIC TRUST RATINGS WAY DOWN IN VICTORIA

         According to the recent citizen survey, “Residents are concerned about the leadership in Victoria.  Public trust ratings have gone way down.  We don’t usually see this.  There’s been a steep decline since 2015, below other communities.”

 

“PUBLIC ASSERTIONS JUST PLAIN WRONG”

MAYOR OWES STAFF A PUBLIC RETRACTION

         Said Councilmember Strigel, “I think the mayor’s public assertion of our over-spending and excess employee headcount is just wrong.  He owes it to the staff to make a public retraction.”

 

VICTORIA’S YARD AND WASTE DUMP SITE

MAY BE CLOSED TO RESIDENTS IN JANUARY 2019

         Consensus on the city’s yard waste site is to let reisdents know that the Council is considering closing it in Janaury 2019.

 

LAWSUIT AGAINST CITY OF VICTORIA

PROPERTY OWNER APPEALS SPECIAL ASSESSMENT

         A property owner in Victoria has properly appealed his assessment related to the reconstruction of Stieger Lake Lane.

 

LAKESIDE DRIVE TO BE COMPLETED IN JULY

IN VICTORIA’S LAKETOWN 9TH ADDITION

         The surcharge is being removed on Lakeside Drive and the road should be open to traffic in mid July.  The surcharge was needed because the road construction crosses a swamp in that area.

 

VICTORIA APPROVES NEW LWQAC

COMMITTEE TO ADDRESS LAKES AND WATER QUALITY

         Council approved a new city committee entitled the “Lakes and Water Quality Advisory Committee.”

 

TIF AND BUILDING OWNERS

CREATED BEAUTIFUL DOWNTOWN VICTORIA

         Said Councilmember Strigel, “What built our downtown was a combination of TIF and building property owners’ taxes.  Those risk takers, who put their money in Victoria, paid.”

 

CREAMERY PROJECT MOVING FORWARD

BIG FEES FOR A VICTORIA BUSINESS

         Said Councilmember Gregory, “This is an exciting project and it’s going to be a substantial buildout.  The tax revenue from this project is going to be substantial.”

 

VICTORIA PREPARES FOR MORE ANNEXATION

PROPERTY SOUTH OF MARSH LAKE ROAD

         Said City Engineer Cara Geheren, “There isn’t a lot left or available within the city limits for development.”  She said the annexation and extension of utilities will create opportunity for development.”

 

EVALUATING DOWNTOWN WALKWAYS

REPAIR COULD COST VICTORIA SERIOUS MONEY

         Council approved a study to determine the scope of improvements necessary to upgrade and repair downtown walkways and pavers.

 

UPDATE ON THE GROCERY STORE BUILDING

AN ACTIVITY CENTER IN DOWNTOWN VICTORIA

         The building is proposed to include axe throwing, bowling, miniature golf, food supply, and entertainment.
