Dedicated to the sunshine of truth,

the moonshine of meeting deadlines,

To the Editor:

The Victoria Lions, in cooperation with the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation and the Lions MD5M Hearing Foundation, has extended its collection locations for prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, and hearing aids.

In addition to the KleinBank in Victoria, two locations have been added as collection sites:  The Parlour Salon and Spa, located on the second floor of the Notermann Building, and Subway, located next to Hi-5 Liquor and Gas.  There are drop boxes at each location for your donation.

Recycled glasses for the Lions can help a child read, an adult succeed in their job, a senior citizens maintain independence, and provide a community with more opportunities to grow and thrive.

To the Editor:

Carver County is hiring watercraft inspectors to staff boat launches across the county.  Inspectors play a crucial role in preventing the spread of AIS and educating the public on the importance of cleaning, draining, and drying their equipment.

The watercraft inspector serves to inform and educate the public to the threats of ecologically harmful aquatic invasive species to Minnesota's waters.  Inspectors work at public water access sites educating the public by providing information to watercraft users and conducting a brief survey while inspecting watercraft for invasive species.

Other duties include assisting the coordinator with access postings, assisting law enforcement with access checks, invasive plant removal, and conducting other research in partnership with different departments, organizations, and other other natural resource projects.

To the Editor:

My name is Helen Louise Aretz Hilgers.  My parents were Tony and Catherine Aretz of Victoria.  They lived next to Jerry Schrempp on Victoria Drive.

Reading a recent issue of the Victoria Gazette, the story celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary of Al and Louise Lehner, I couldn't believe how similar our lives were.

First, I too was raised on a farm which is now Marsh Lake Reserve and I'm the second oldest of five girls so I could milk (surge) cows, butcher roosters, and start and drive our John Deere tractor.

In my senior year at Guardian Angels in Chaska, at a dance at Valley, I met my future husband, Art Hilgers, who was home on leave from the U.S. Army.  This was 1958.  He was sent overseas to SHAPE headquarters in France.  That was Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.

Art was a Courier so there were lots of trips to Germany.  We, too, wrote each other once a week.  We got married in 1960, opened our wedding cards, and counted the money.  We only made it to the Christmas Lake Motel.

In 1961 Art was recalled to the Army because the Berlin Wall was going up.  Never had to go to Germany.  We spent one year in an RV.  In 1964 we took over Art's farm and it was back to farming.  We raised seven children and in 1995 built a house in Cologne.

Just had to smile at the good memories and reading about Al and Louise Lehner.  I'm wishing you a belated Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary, Louise and Al Lehner.  Art and I reached our 46th and he died at age 67, too young, so enjoy every day.  Save that Gazette!!

EDITOR'S NOTE:  Thank you for writing, Helen.  I knew your parents quite well, especially Tony because he had many cameras and loved to take pictures for the Gazette.  I often ran into Tony and Catherine as they were cleaning and taking care of Father Elstan's apartment in back of the old church.  Of course, your mother was a longtime wonderful cook for the Victoria Lions.  I appreciated both of your parents' kindnesses to someone who arrived in Victoria as a newcomer.

To the Editor:

Hello.  My name is Judy and I see the Victoria paper out at our high school in Waconia where I work.  My husband and I decided this would be a good Christmas gift for his mother.  Enclosed is a check for the $25 subscription.  Thanks so much.
