A Watershed Year Continued

Dedicated to the sunshine of truth,

the moonshine of meeting deadlines,

and the starshine of Victoria.

A YEAR OF ARRIVALS

In 2014 we saw the arrival of many new homes in Victoria.  As a matter of fact, Victoria issued 110 new single family homes as of December 30th, 2014, plus there are four more in the works.

We also saw the groundbreaking and arrival of larger projects in Victoria.  In March 2014 the new Lakeside Building in downtown Victoria began to rise on Stieger Lake Lane.  It was completed in August 2014 (the photo) and it brought the arrival of new businesses to Victoria including The Social Ice Cream Shop, Cornerstone Insurance, Focus Engineering, and Jonathan Lueck CPA.  Other new businesses arrived in downtown Victoria in 2014 including Victoria Auto Sales powered by Waconia Dodge, Churchills Cigars and Gifts, and the Dirty Angel Cycle Shop.

In June 2nd, 2014, two new public buildings -- the Victoria City Hall-Library and the Victoria Public Works Facility were approved and took shape in Victoria.  (See page 20.)  On June 23rd, 2014, a joint agreement with Carver County for the operation of the Victoria Library was approved.   Neighborhood parks at Lakebridge and South Lake Virginia Shores were completed in Victoria in 2014.

On November 10th, 2014, we saw the arrival of Laurie Hokkanen for her first day on the job as the new Victoria City Manager.  Laurie conducted her first Victoria City Council meeting that very evening.

There were other less visible arrivals in 2014.   For example, the Victoria Lions brought their First Annual Spring Fling to Victdoria on Friday, April 11th, 2014, drawing a crowd of 26 vendors and wall to wall people in the Victoria Hall.

In 2014 the Victoria Recreation Center marked its 10-year anniversary and the Deer Run Golf Club its 25-year anniversary.

A few other arrivals noted in the Gazette included the 60th birthday of Irene Kerber (February 8th, 2014), the 60th birthday of Tom Stumpf (April 20th, 2014), the 70th wedding anniversary of Tommy and Jeanne Thompson (May 3rd, 2014), the release of Fred Plocher's book Stealing Watermelons (June 2014), the 60th wedding anniversary of Al and Louise Lehner (October 10th, 2014), and the 40th anniversary of Lois Tiggelaar's employment with KleinBank (November 2014).

Unfortunately, there was another arrival in 2014 that cannot be ignored.  It was the arrival of actions, complaints, and lawsuits against four City of Victoria councilmembers.  Some of the allegations have been dismissed.  Some continue.  As part of Watershed Year 2014, this arrival was indeed draining.
