Letters Continued

Dedicated to the sunshine of truth,

the moonshine of meeting deadlines,

and the starshine of Victoria.

To the Editor:

The Postal Regulatory Commission handed everyone who uses the mail a lump of coal on Christmas Eve:  approval of the U.S. Postal Service's proposal to raise postage rates by more than triple today's inflation.

The new rates will go into effect January 26th if USPS elects to accept the PRC's decision.

The PRC did disagree, however, with the Postal Service's justification for a proposed "exigency" rate increase that it lost more than 53 billion pieces of mail because of the Great Recession.  Rather, the PRC continues to blame Internet diversion as the principal reason for Postal Service losses.  The PRC only credits the recession with less than half the USPS financial loss, but granted the increase anyway, noting USPS needs the money.

National Newspaper Association President Robert M. Williams jr., publisher of the Blackshear (GA) Times, said that NNA respectfully disagrees with the Postal Service's request as well as the commission's decision.  He insists a lack of action by Congress to enact postal reform is at the root of the problem.

We are whistling in the dark.  We cannot avoid the fact the Postal Service is operating in a new world.  We all are.  The longer the Postal Service and lawmakers avoid reducing core costs for the delivery network, the more pain will be inflicted upon all who use the mail.  Fewer and fewer customers will be paying more and more.  This approved postage increase solves nothing.

To the Editor:

As 2013 comes to a close, Dick and I would like to express our gratitude to you.  As you know, it has been a year of huge change.  With changes come a huge appreciation for what we have.

Real Deals has an absolutely wonderful new home in Victoria which will be even more fabulous in 2014.  The 1st part of March you will have almost 500 square feet more of store to shop.  We are able to bring to the community a shop that is affordable, ever changing, fun, and has you, my customer, as the priority.  I would not be here without you, every single one of my customers who comes from near and far to shop for almost five years.

Now it's inventory time and our clearance section is overflowing.  Come enjoy the best values of the year.  The more you buy at great savings, the less I have to count!  Help us make room for fresh new product.  Spring will be on its way soon.  We are open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

To the Editor:

As you have likely heard by now, Target experienced unauthorized access to payment card data from U.S. Target stores.  We take this crime seriously.  It was a crime against Target, our team members, and, most importantly, you, our valued guest.

We understand that a situation like  this creates stress and anxiety about the safety of your payment card data at Target.  Our brand has been built on a 50-year foundation of trust with our guests, and we want to assure you that the cause of this issue has been addressed and you can shop with confidence at Target.  Over the coming days and weeks, we will keep you up to date.

         Gregg Steinhafel,

         Target's CEO

To the Editor:

Mein Lieber Gott, you read heavy stuff.  I never heard or read the word "farraginous" from your Vocabulary Column.  But all the way, your column is for me very interesting.  And now I am sending you my prose with this small poem (found while leafing through my schoolbook Anthology of English literature) that time and eternity brings together, as you can enjoy of what yourself see or do.

To see a World in a Grain of Sand,

And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,

Hold Infinity in the Palm of your Hand

And Eternity in an Hour.  ~Wm Blake

When I read it, I found it striking and I thought of our editor of the Victoria Gazette.  Sue, I wish you and your paper the wind in the back.
