The Victoria

GAZETTE

January 2011

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  It is that time again.  Seems to come up so quickly.  The new blood drive in Victoria is Monday, January 24th, from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Victoria Recreation Center.  People can call 952-443-2531 to make an appointment.  As usual, babysitting is available and walk-ins are welcome.

To the Editor:

I was delighted to shop at Fresh Seasons this week and see the signs in the store stating that they were closing on Christmas Day and why they were closing, reminding shoppers that the carry-out boy is a son, the deli workers are mothers, sisters, brothers.

I love our local grocery store and the fact that they employ our local people.  Along with that, they respect the fact that these workers are members of families who should be home with their loved ones on Christmas Day.  I wish more of our American stores would follow suit for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Fresh Seasons did a nice job expressing their sentiment for closing on Christmas.  I thank them for not being open on that day and allowing workers to be home with their families.

         Faithful Shopper,

To the Editor:

Happy New Year!  My writing may look a bit like chicken scratching as my arthritis in the right wrist is sore and I got a wrist support on.  I fractured it slipping on ice in the driveway going out to feed Missy my dog in the winter of 1993.  I used a couple shovels to brace myself on the skating rink driveway.  It was shiny like glass and no salt around except table salt and that doesn’t work.  I pushed the dog dish with one of the shovels.  I pushed too fast and the bowl flipped over.  I reached to pick it up and Missy started in eating and slobbers me with smooches.  I barely could get up with the slippery driveway and getting licked by Missy.  I stood up and that’s when I slipped.  I crawled on my hands and knees to the back steps which were not icy.  A friend of Mom’s took me to the doctor and my doctor wasn’t there.  I got stuck with some other idiot who didn’t think it needed an x-ray.  I insisted it was broken but he wouldn’t put a cast on it, not even a sling or wrist support.  The work and cold air that winter hurt my wrist, which got real swollen, so now I have arthritis in it.  Lifting things like a Minneapolis phone book can make it sore for a few days.

Hi, Sue.  Enclosed is a check for $20 for another year of the Gazette, which we certainly enjoy.  We sure do enjoy your pictures and Addie’s drawing.  Found the fishhook on page 11 of the Deer Run ad, down in the left corner.  Thank you.  Happy Holidays to you all.

To the Editor:

I was at Westview earlier today with our Ladies Aid, presenting a handmade quilt to Verna Miller who will be turning 98 tomorrow (December 21st).  As I read from Proverbs 31 for her, we all got a kick out of verse 21:  “She is not afraid for her household when it snows ...”

I’m hoping you’ll help me get the word out about a prayer gathering I’d like to begin weekday mornings, starting Monday, January 10th, at 6:15 a.m. at Fresh Seasons Market in Victoria.  This will be a 15-minute gathering each weekday morning using Morning Prayers from the recently published Common Prayer by Zondervan.  Books will be provided for us to use.

Any church affiliation is welcome.  No church affiliation is necessary.  To quote from the introduction by Shane Claiborne, Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, and Enuma Okoro, “If you love liturgy, this book is for you.  If you don’t know what liturgy is, this book is also for you.”

Of all things we do to get ready for the day, prayer really should be one of the most important.  I’m simply calling this “6:15 Prayer,” under the inspiration of Ephesians 6:15 which reads:  “As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the gospel of peace.”

Thanks, again and always, my friend.  Peace be with you.
