To the Editor:

Last fall, over 100 disability and senior community organizations came together to launch the 5% Campaign to increase support to older adults and people with disabilities who receive community-based services.  These services are crucial to helping people maintain good health and remain in their homes and communities longer.

What does community-based care look like?  People with disabilities may need help getting up in the morning, being dressed and ready for the day.  Older adults may need assistance preparing meals, taking medications, or driving to health appointments.  All of this care can be accomplished in the homes of individuals at far less cost than institutional settings.

It's care that makes economic sense.  Here's just one example:  An entire year of meals for older adults through our Senior Nutrition service equals the cost of one week of care in a nursing home.

To the Editor:

First, thank you for the nice family pictures at Christmas in Ghent, from your Sue's Album.  Nice to see all of you there, and to see back your brothers -- Louis, Bernie, Paul, and Matt, all changed after more than 30 years seeing them.

In your January letter "From the Editor," you wrote about a Man Cave.  We were wondering here what could that be?  Do they have a cave on their building plot?  As far as I know from my visit, your building plot is not rocky but Allan is a civil engineer and did he excavate or make an artificial cave in your garden, as we have seen in the English gardens?

Gisele suggested that it could be a room with a bar somewhere in the house, and I said for me, a Man Cave is his hobby unit.  Sue, will you shed your light on this matter so that we can close this discussion?

How is the weather at yours?  Here in Dilsen we only got four days of light frost.  In my garden the primulas are flowering, the daffodils and tulips are growing too early for the time of the year.  Maybe we'll have a white Easter.

I still am grateful to you for making my Minnesota visit in 2012 the pick of the basket.

         Hello to Victoria.

To the Editor:

I am retiring in February and will have to stop my advertising with the Victoria Gazette because I will no longer be an employee with Catholic United Financial.  My grandchildren need me so I decided it was time to retire.  I will be just as busy helping out all I can with family.  Thank you for helping me all these years with everything you have done.  I will still be reading your newspaper.  It is perfectly okay for my ad to be in your February issue.  My last day is February 28th.

To the Editor:

The Metropolitan Council is seeking applicants for a summer internship program for college students interested in public service careers.  The Urban Scholars leadership development program is designed to help the work force of the future build professional and leadership skills.

The Metropolitan Council hopes to develop a group of young talent that can begin careers in public service and become the next generation of government leaders and influence.

The 12-week program offers full-time paid positions from May 27th through August 15th.  Students must have completed their first year of post-secondary education prior to the beginning of the internship and be enrolled and in good standing at a two-year or four-year college or university, graduate program, or law school.

The Council will select six applicants for participation in the Urban Scholars program, which is in addition to the Council's regular summer intern program, with position postings in February.

Apply online by March 3rd.  For more info, email Erin.Eillison@metc.state.mn.us or Luis.Morales@metc.state.mn.us.
