Pinewood Derby. Cub Scout Pack 589 held its annual Pinewood Derby on Saturday, January 18th, at Victoria Elementary School.  This annual rite challenges Scouts to come up with a concept and design for a car and to move from concept to finished product by using tools, paint, and their developing skills.

All Scouts begin with the same basic kit:  a block of pinewood, wheels, and nails that serve as axles.  From there it is up to the Scout’s imagination, creativity, and hands-on work.  Maximum vehicle weight is not to exceed 5 ounces.  Getting a vehicle up-to-weight often involves creatively drilling out the vehicle and inserting weights and even something as simple as gluing coins to the underside of the car.  The goal is to get the vehicle exactly at the allowed 5 ounces to achieve maximum speed.

Scouts are asked to read a statement upon registration of their vehicles that says, “Good sportsmanship involves the principles of winning humbly and not bragging.  It also involves losing gracefully.”  Those who advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” include Tim Larson of Victoria, Beadling, Alexander Houliston, Larson Cole of Victoria, Alex Anderson, Connie Kujak, Matthew Ragaglia, Mitchell Lack, Leif Ewald of Victoria, Lucas Simon, Andrew Tetrick, Jonathan Early, Jackson Cole of Victoria, Mitchell Holman of Victoria, Dylan Kiefer of Victoria, Nick Berg.
