My mother made lutefisk for me and Allan, one of the recent times we were home before her open heart surgery in October.  The lutefisk was outstanding as were the mashed potatoes made from the bounty of my dad's garden.  My mouth is watering at the remembrance.  I'll soon be making lutefisk -- perhaps not for my children and  grandchildren -- some things you just gotta play by ear -- and I'm going to do exactly like my mother did:  place the filet in a glass dish, no additional moisture, cover it with plastic wrap, and put it in the microwave for just the right amount of time.

Back in the days of my childhood, Mom used a clean white cotton dish towel to encase the lutefisk and then held it in a kettle of bowling water until it smelled -- I mean, jelled --  just right.  Today there is no smell and the jell is not so tricky as it used to be.  How do things like that happen?  It's called progress, and that's just the kind of progress I like.

Finding the fishhook in the Victoria Gazette each month isn't progress, but it can be tricky.  Last month it was wrapped around that corn cob in the Waterbrooke Fellowship ad.  When I swirled my hand in the minnow bucket, I caught Sandra Harris of Excelsior to win the $10 drawing.  Congratulations, Sandra.  It's better than a lump of coal, huh?

There's another fishhook hidden in this issue of the Gazette.  If you spot it, you might drop a line to P.O. Box 387, Victoria, MN 55386 telling of its location and sinker in the mail or you could email Sue@VictoriaGazette.com.  I keep the minnow bucket in a warm place so it won't be freezing over during these cold winter months.

Have a jelly roll Christmas -- I mean, have a jolly ol' Christmas.
