The Scoop

at City Hall

To the Editor:

Great article on Fred Plocher.  He was behind me a couple grades; however, we were in the same Confirmation class at Lake Auburn Moravian Church.  I also remember him playing the trombone in the Waconia High School Band.  He may be modest, but he was a pretty good end (wide receiver) on our football team at Waconia.  He ran like a deer.  I thought that is where the name came from for the golf/housing development.

To the Editor:

I moved to Victoria about seven years ago.  Arnette Bell, her mother Hattie Bell, and I live in Deer Run.

My oldest son Adam Bartley is an actor who lives in Hollywood and has found some success in a new television show on the A&E Network called Longmire.  Adam plays the role of Deputy Sheriff "Ferg."

I thought this might make for an interesting article in your Victoria Gazette -- "Local Victoria Resident's Son Finds Success in Hollywood."  The show has earned great ratings and reviews.  We are hopeful that it will get another season beyond the first ten for this season.

On a side note, we hunt for the fishhook regularly.  So far we have not found it in the recent edition.

To the Editor:

Your refreshing feature story, "Drawn to Develop," in the July issue of the Gazette captured the true substance of Fred Plocher.  It was an interesting focus on his personality and many accomplishments that have enriched our community, coupled with his Victoria background and early work ethic.

Knowing Fred as a friend, and working closely with him as a business partner for so many years, I can testify that his quiet confidence in times of workday difficulties or crisis has a calming effect on everyone around him.  The German translation of Frederick is "peaceful ruler."

Gazette readers will recall Will Rogers, the American humorist and social commentator, who said, "I never met a man I didn't like."  Fred doesn't say negative things about other individuals.  He speaks well of others.  I believe Fred once said to me, "I never met a man I didn't like ... except Will Rogers."

Again, Sue, it was a nice piece of journalism and it allowed the community a peek at Fred's journey in Victoria.  'Tis an honor just to know Fred.  'Tis a blessing to call him friend.

To the Editor:

Hi, Sue.  I couldn't find the fishhook on Addie's drawing so kept looking.  How nice to find that "My Mother is a Gift" on the Emerald Crest ad had July's fishhook.

To the Editor:

I see I'm not the only one conned by a carnie at the Carver County Fair.  Fred Plocher did as well, but I didn't blow $96.  I blew about $10.  Had some birthday money and took $10 along when Mom went to the fair on Kids' Day.  She's looking at her entries and I had my eye on a game where a person could win a 10-pack of Wrigley's gum.  I did win that, but then blew another $4 on a game consisting of popping balloons with darts, which is nearly impossible when the wind hits the balloons and the darts won't pop them.  My "big prize" was a little pillow stuffed with sawdust.  It was starting to leak but all the prizes were junk on that game.  I stayed away from carnie games after that.  The little pillow I used with playing Barbie dolls.  I'd use it as a beanbag couch.  Ma made a new pillow and stuffed it with old nylon stockings.  I fell asleep with a piece of that Wrigley's in my mouth and woke with it in my hair, on my glasses, and on the pillow.  Of course, Ma had to say her famous quote, "You dassen't do that, Lady Jane!"  I was always referred to as Lady Jane when being scolded by Ma.  I was about 15 when she stopped.

On page 11 on the Gift in the Emerald Crest ad, I see the famous fishhook.
