Dedicated to the sunshine of truth,

the moonshine of meeting deadlines,

and the starshine of Victoria.

Kathy Bognanni, Branch Manager at the Victoria Library, takes care of visitors at the Victoria Library with the assistance of other librarians and volunteers.

These libraries are governed by the Carver County Library Board, which is comprised of five members, each appointed by the five Carver County Commissioners.  The City of Victoria is split into two commissioner districts.

According to online information, the  Library Board establishes policies and rules, reviews operations and budget, develops long range plans, receives gifts and donations to the library, and maintains and develops library collections.

Heidi Hoks is the Library Director for Carver County.  There are other staff members for the branch libraries.  Kathy Bognanni is the branch manager for both the Victoria Library and the Chanhassen Library.

all of the Victoria Library faces Stieger Lake in beautiful downtown Victoria.  "We've got the best view of any of our libraries," said Kathy.

The Victoria Library is unique in another way.  "Every single book in the Victoria Library is new," she said.  "Everything here was purchased especially for the Victoria Library -- the books, the CDs, the DVDs.  There are no scratches on anything."  It is not uncommon for a child to pick up a book and smell the newness of it.

Kathy received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Secondary Education at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.  She received her Master of Science degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois in Urbana.

Kathy and her husband Sal live in Eden Prairie and have two sons.  Peter is a writer and Mark is an economist.

"Peter won an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, the Rome Prize for Fiction, and got to spend a whole year in Italy, where he started to work on a new book," said the proud mother.  His first book is entitled The House of Tomorrow.

Kathy has been with the Carver County Library System for two and a half years and was previously a library branch manager in the Des Moines Public Library System.

How is she handling the responsibilities of two libraries in the Carver County System?  "A lot of the tasks are complimentary," she replied.  "I'm enjoying it.  We did have a lot of library users in Victoria before the Victoria Library."

I emailed Kathy Bognanni the following questions before I met up with her last week at the Victoria Library.  Her responses are included here.

         1) Is the Victoria Library the smallest in the Carver County Library System?  [Referring to both physical space and quantity of library resources.]

Kathy: "The Victoria Library is 4,000 square feet.  The Watertown Library is 3,700 square feet.  The Victoria collection size is still in the process of being completed as we wait for items to be checked out by the public before adding additional titles.

"Currently we have about 9,100 items in the Victoria Library.  Every item in the Victoria Library is brand new.  A wide variety of children's and teen materials meets the needs for all ages of youth.  Adult materials are focused on current popular items that give the Victoria Library the best of books, DVDs, and CDs that are currently in demand."

         2) Is Chaska Library the largest?

Kathy: "Chanhassen Library is the largest with 32,640 square feet and 112,500 items."
