IT’S HISTORIC:  MAYOR’S TERM WILL BE 4 YEARS

THREE SEATS UP FOR ELECTION THIS FALL

It's historic!  For the first time, since at least 1975, when the city administrator form of government was enacted in Victoria, and most likely since the years prior to 1975, the term of the Mayor of Victoria will be four years instead of two.  The vote was 4-1-0 on March 12th, 2012.  Mayor Mary Thun abstained from voting.

Four councilmembers already serve four-year terms in Victoria with the terms staggered so that every two years, two positions are up for election.  In the fall of 2012, when elections are next held, the mayor's office is also up for election or re-election (there are no term limits), with the new four-year term beginning January 2013.  The two other council seats up for election or re-election this year are currently held by Tom O'Connor and Kim Roden.

Filing period for city council positions is from July 31st to August 14th.  The three polling places for the three Victoria precincts (see related article in these City Scoop pages) will be used for both the primary election August 12th and the general election November 6th.

SLALOM SKI COURSE ON SCHUTZ LAKE

APPROVED IF RULES ARE KNOWN AND OBEYED

Although Holly Kreft reported that the city did not receive complaint calls last summer regarding the Schutz Lake Slolom Ski Course, Councilmember Kim Roden said she did.

With the annual permit renewable at this time of the year, and usually on the consent agenda, the ski course was up for discussion at the March 12th city council meeting.  Items on the consent agenda are considered routine and non controversial.

"I have gotten complaints," stated Councilmember Roden, who is a resident with her husband on Schutz Lake.  "I've said that as long as I didn't get complaints, I'd leave it on the consent agenda.  I need more information.  What are the rules regarding no wake?"  She mentioned the demise of a Schutz Lake Association.

Replied Greg Kurowski, a resident on Schutz Lake and slalom skier, "The Schutz Lake Skiers Association is alive and well.  It's the Homeowners Association that has atrophied."

Repeated Councilmember Roden, "What are the rules on wakes?"

"There is supposed to be a 100-foot barrier between a wake and a property," said Mr. Kurowski.

Said Councilmember Roden, "The complaints come to me [rather than to city staff] because I live on the lake."  She presented photos of skiers and boats in violation of the rules.

"I think we've gotten complacent," she said.  "I ask you to help us get the word out that there are rules.  There needs to be self enforcement.  When is the last time we publicized those rules?  There are neighbors that don't want soil erosion.  There are also wakeboarders who are less than 100 feet from the shore.  Make a commitment to me to help get the word out."

Regarding one of the photos displaying a boat and skier very close to a dock on Schutz Lake, Mr. Kurowski said, "I know the person in the boat.  I apologize for him and I'll get the word out.  If we know what the issues are, we can deal with them."

The motion to approve the slalom ski coursed passed 5-0, with conditions that boaters and skiers inform themselves and residents about the rules.
